Where to start with London's La Shark?
Their effortless way of crafting indie-pop formed from madcap marrying of all genres from the last 40yrs?
Their eccentric outlook on modern life?
Or the fact it all faintly whiffs of Capital City hipster-isms?
Well to be brutally honest, from listening to new single 'Mr Modern Man,' the conclusion made in this household is unfortunately the latter. La Shark aka Samuel Geronimo Deschamps, N.H.A. Buxton, Love Maynard, Benjamin Francis Markham, Sami El Enany (see, even the names are pure Shoreditch! I am truly surprised they aren't all named Nathan Barley) have followed up from their promising debut limited single 'Magazine Cover' with 80's aping mediocrity. This is with great disappointment from this listeners point of view. The aforementioned 'Magazine Cover' has been championed by many a daytime and specialist radio DJ alike, and to be fair to the band that championing was well deserved, their debut sounding like Late Of The Pier play fighting with David Byrne on Devo's bouncy castle...covered in jelly and ice cream.
However, what we are 'treated' to with 'Mr Modern Man' is a pleasant enough funky bass line and sparkling new romantic synths and a mundane drum beat, all drawled/sang/talked over by Samuel or Sami (not really sure here, and don't really have this interest to dig deeper). Lyrics of meeting the perfect man go nowhere, leaving the listener disinterested less than halfway through the three minutes twenty seconds.
To sum up, the lacklustre tune coupled with those lyrics sounds like an ageing Spandau Ballet fronted by The Mystery Jet's Blaine Harrison, phoning in his vocal duties.
If this is Modern Man, what the hell happened to the last 30yrs?
La Shark – 'Mr Modern Man' is released August 6th.
