Drop Out Venus are a threesome consisting of brother and sister Iva and Chris, and ERHD, who appeared at the siblings friends house with a nasty gash on her shoulder after a bicycle accident whilst they were dancing to PJ Harvey. After a bit of soothing, ERHD joined the band and 3 days later they were gigging. The Jazz Junk trio are proving to be masters of their craft, making dense, dramatic music that’s full of sinister, theatre and intense lyrics.

‘I Kill Foxes’ is their latest single, which draws inspiration from the Smog anti-ballade ‘I Break Horses’, which was released in 1999. Iva states:
"This is the saddest song I've ever written and I borderline hate it. It started off as a joke. King HeadSwim was for a while obsessed with Bill Callahan's I Break Horses, which is a pretty terrifying song about one man's behaviour towards women. He used to play it to us a lot, and for his birthday I wanted to write him my own version of that song in which the roles of man and woman were reversed. The problem was that it stopped being a joke in the first five minutes of improvising the words and melody and it felt like the song kind of turned on me and became confrontational as opposed to in any way entertaining."
In order to get the pure essence from ‘I Kill Foxes’, it’s imperative that you listen to ‘I Break Horses’, which is equally as ominous.

WATCH // 'I Break Horses'

‘I Break Horses’ describes the protagonist’s inability to cradle a lover’s heart and defend it from heartbreak, painting a monstrous picture of the power a man has to destroy a woman simply by using “a few well placed words”. The most dramatic part of the song is the ending, where he swims away to a lonely island, and commands the desperate woman to not follow, showcasing the brutality behind a man’s actions and the ferocious desire to tear himself away from the situation.

‘I Kill Foxes’
is the mirror image of the ‘I Break Horses’, where the woman is now empowered and voices her ruthless desire to destroy men. Iva’s haunting vocals narrates the tale of the femme fatale and showcases her cold, grotesque ability to disassociate herself from the responsibility of her actions by stating that this is just what she does.

The terrifying relation is cloaked in grave distortion and a carnival of dark guitar strokes, which tantalises every sense. The spectacular crescendo that works impressively to build drama throughout the song adds another dimension of obscurity and emphasises the ghostly ending even more. After a hectic ensemble of pulsing drums and the determined bass that’s a constant power throughout, you’re left with Iva singing “When I die, time won’t be on my side”, a phantom that lingers when the silence sets in.

The whole track is a tremendous narration of a ghoulish tale that leaves a chill in your bones, and with a thrilling soundtrack that adds another element of theatre to this fascinating piece.

'I Kill Foxes' is set to be released September 24th
