The Robbie Boyd Band, a London-based septet headed by the band's namesake, Robbie Boyd, has been making waves with its singles over the last few years, supported by BBC Radio 2's Graham Norton, Paul O'Grady, Aled Jones and Sir Tim Rice, Asbolute Radio's Dave Gorman, and 6 Music's Tom Robinson among many others. Perhaps topping the list of accolades, the Chris Evans Breakfast Show invited the Robbie Boyd Band to play for BBC Radio 2 at the London Olympics.
With a sweetly cheerful folk-rock feel reminiscent of Jack Johnson, the Robbie Boyd Band's polished sound exemplifies itself in 'When I Believe', an almost bashfully optimistic admission of needing time before falling in love again. The opening vocals are stark, but as they speed up soft percussion comes in right behind them. As compositions go, the whole thing is ridiculously smooth, building on itself effortlessly. The back-up vocals are incredible. Having a small choir back you up? Awesome. Having them do it in delicate harmony? Nothing short of spectacular. The Robbie Boyd Band doesn't have a wholly original sound, but it's taken what's come before and shined it up good.
This song is flawless in every way - the lyrics are poetic, the structure is catchy without being overwhelming, the vocals are clear, the instruments are in time, in tune and orchestrated perfectly...basically, you have to listen to it.
