Budget Cuts is the debut EP from London quartet #Tags, who are set on making pure, unadulterated pop music, straight from the shed. The EP is a wonderful collection of bouncy indie-pop that’s bursting with caffeine-fuelled harmonies and melodies that are sickly sweet, yet I’d be more than happy to make myself ill with over-gorging on #Tags, any day. The band encompasses everything that’s quintessentially brilliant about DIY music. Their rough and ready production is pretty much spectacular and suits the #Tags energy and musical direction down to a t.
Budget Cuts isn’t the usual sugary pop that we see forced upon us from the big 3 record companies that are just factory made drivel, but it’s independent brilliance that’s filled to the very brim with musical elements from Ska, indie, Britpop, pop and a whole host of other fantastic genres, rolled into one efficient EP.
I know we’re all a bit gloomy about the summer nearing to its end, however, if you’re like me and hoping for an Indian summer like we had last year (I was having a BBQ on the beach in October!) then #Tags’ Budget Cuts would be an ideal sound to add to your summer soundtrack. It’s never too late!
These four London lads are champions of sensational guitar riffs, plastered with high-pitched vocals even Mika couldn’t reach, and exultant melodies that will make you bop along in your very seat. Their playful lyrics add another dimension of pure fun to their colourful festival of joyful pop.
They’ve already boasted critical acclaim from the likes of Huw Stephens and some airplay on BBC6 Music, and now they’ve even earned themselves the AltSounds stamp of approval, so they’re definitely got something worth shouting about.
