The Heartbreaks eh? The name sort of says it all doesn't it, you kinda get the feeling they aren't going to be a band who dabble in the extreme fringes of new music. If you have already heard the Morecambe based four piece then you will already have an opinion, be it a good or bad one.
Personally, I have heard them, and had the...erm...pleasure(?) of seeing them perform their work live too. In fact here is a small extract from that review “...A Smiths for a new generation or run of the mill downbeat indie?...”, if you missed said review then I shall hold out from the answer and try and make this one as impartial as possible.
Ahem, right!
These Lancashire lads are, on paper, a promising prospect. Cool clobber, swish haircuts, shy and sensitive if slightly effeminate front-man. Sounds good so far yes? Well, yes it would be if the tunes were up to that image, they aren't. Forthcoming single 'Polly' is a prime example of the dull wishy washy jangly guitar indie-pop that seems to be deluging stages up and down our fair isle in recent times[see Tribes, Two Door Cinema Club, etc.]
It's quite clear that The Heartbreaks gang see themselves in some way as a modern nod to the seminal Morissey, Marr and Co. but with introductory lyrics like “Tell me about your boyfriend, Does he treat you half as good as I think he should. Would you like to be my friend? Don’t turn me down there’s nothing thicker than blood” it seems they are quite a way off that peak yet.
Musically the track is proficient in its timing, unmoving, reminiscent of many other bands on the 'scene' and slightly reeking of counterfeit nostalgia yes. But, proficient none the less, and when that's the only plus that can be found it's truly Heartbreaking isn't it!
