For a Canadian band on a Canadian label Hot Panda’s frantic pop music has always sounded rather British with their 70’s punk/pop influences shining through. On their latest single ‘Language’ taken from their third full length record Go Outside nothing much has changed, except for of course their new found spirit of ‘chillax’.

“I made a promise that we’d be a voice in perfect harmony,”
opens Chris Connelly here setting off the spirit of camaraderie that washes over this peppy song. His voice glides over the laidback surf of the guitar melody as a sharp and snazzy riff cuts across the top.

WATCH // 'Language'

Like much of the bands work it’s got that cheeky feeling that’s filtered through a layer of biting tension, though considerably less so here than on earlier tracks such as ‘Mindlessnesslessness’ which are spat at you through gritted teeth and clamped jaws. No here we are introduced to a band much more content to sip cocktails from coconuts by the side of the pool, which coincidentally is probably where this was recorded(it wasn't). It’s art-pop played with the veracity of punk rock. It’s a musical delight as the trumpets of a sad clown ruminate across the verses, as keyboards and violins create battlegrounds on which this suburban conflict is fought.

It’s a solid second single from a frenetic band of creepy Canadian smart alec’s who continue to produce exciting, thought provoking, challenging, and ever maturing music and quite frankly it demands your attention.

'Language' is out September 17th on Mint
