Who’d have thought that back in 1999, a mere 13 years ago (fuuuccckkkk! That makes me feel old) P!nk would be where she is today....probably not her; as she was then moulded and pushed to sings song she didn’t care for, but 1999’s Can’t Take Me Home was right on point, back then, and launched her into the stratosphere. But, thank fuck the girl has balls and fought her way through the production line to deliver us her 2nd album Missundaztood, which was genuinely her, all her...and now with the imminent release of her 6th studio album, The Truth About Love, she has firmly made her mark as the bad-ass pop-rocker everyone loves to hate. And I bloody love her.

For the first time ever, I actually won tickets to the iTunes Festival, normally I get my in with guest / press passes but thought I’d try my luck with this one, just in case. To say it’s a totally different vibe down-stairs with the masses would be an understatement, I just haven’t made up my mind if I like that vibe or not! There certainly was no shortage of hardcore P!nk fans, the lady herself even paid her respects to one group of fans in the crowd that’d been following her at her live shows since she started at aged 19! But, as it’s the iTunes Festival, there are, of course the people that are there simply there because they won something, and this is a shame as not only are they not really into it, but they are taking the spot for real fans and kinda dragging the atmosphere down a little as they stand on the peripherals nodding their heads. This is not a head nodding gig, it’s a bloody head-banging, get up and dance like a dick gig!

Anyway, maybe that’s my issue. And once I got over it and got into it, it was a freakin' awesome show. Ok ok so we had none of P!nk's usual high wire, high flying antics (if you’ve seen her live before you’ll know what I mean) but could we really expect that at a more intimate gig like this at The Roundhouse? I didn’t. But what we did have was her usual potty mouth, fuck you attitude, her fantastic rapport with the crowd and importantly her band. We had her incredible voice, with its gravelly undertones. There’s no denying this girl can belt them out...and according to her, since giving up smoking she’s gained an octave...and I’ll vouch for that.

Alright so there were a couple of technical hitches with a song having to be started again and some queries over the tempo of another, oh yeh and a few forgotten lyrics...but P!nk just owns it as she exclaims “I haven’t sung these songs in 3 fucking years, bear with me if I forget the fucking lyrics”. The crowd didn’t care, P!nk didn’t care and her band didn’t care, we all laughed it off. Its live music and we’re only human! Speaking of her band, bar the glitches, they were as tight as ever and I feel they need some plaudits too; crazy Mark Schulman on drums; as energetic as a box of frogs, the gorgeous Eva Gardner on bass, the extraordinarily talented Justin Chapman on keys, Jason Derrico wailing away on guitar, multi-instrumental Kat Lucas on keys and guitar and let us not forget the fabulous Stacy and Jenny on backing vocals. Put them all-together and you have an extraordinary band and a truly amazing leader!

Perhaps opening the show with 2 new hits wasn’t the best of moves...at least give the crowd something to get them into the swing of things first. But then boom; "U&UR Hand"– that’s done it, almost every fucker in the place is screaming along and jumping like a loon, including me and my pal! We’re then treated to 2 more newbies and, although the crowd don’t know them and calm down a bit again, they’re bloomin’ great tracks and if you had any doubts about the material on the new album The Truth About Love (out 17th Sept) kick them aside, as from what I heard it is pure P!nk!! Back to the classics again with tracks like "Just Like A Pill", "Family Portrait" and "Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely)" – which, if anyone cares, is my personal fave; P!nk has a way of taking everyday life and issues that we all face and writing absolutely truthful corkers like this, magic.

Watch // P!nk - Leave me Alone (I'm Lonely)

Things slow down a bit with the beautiful ballad "Sober"; a brutally honest song that makes you feel you’re almost intruding – let’s all get out the lighters!

Of course penultimate track for the night is the lead single from the new album "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)". I’ll be honest, when I first heard this, I was bitterly disappointed. It felt lazy. And THAT bit (you know the bit I mean) just hurt my ears. However, after a road trip through Europe in the summer hearing it on the European radio's constantly, it grew on me. Live? It blew me (pardon the pun!) away. She hit the bloody note! Now I can’t say if there was some autotune “magic” going on, I like to think there wasn’t but who knows?! The song really works in a live context, more so than on record, and I can now say I’m an official fan of it!

“Do you want one more? Of course you fucking do!" – the crowd goes wild, the band strike up "So What" and we ALL (yeh even the pickeys there for the freebie) go wild. Great way to end a great, albeit short set (1hr 20 mins and somehow she got in 16 tracks and plenty of banter!).

P!nk, welcome back Mama; the pleasure is, once again, all ours!
