Calling Canadian producer Ovi M’s Get Away an EP is a bit of a misnomer. In actual fact there are two tunes on offer here, first in original mixes and branching from there. So let’s check it out!
‘Get Away’ is deep dark tech-house, the original mix opening with the tinny shuffle of hi-hats and simple 4x4 kick drum before shifting into less familiar territory. Shifty whoosh sounds and clanging metal percussion create a slightly unnerving but effective build up for 9 minutes of shuffling beats and distorted, warping vocal samples that suck you into Ovi M’s techno vortex, sounding a little like ‘Da Funk’ fed through an industrial mangle! The drums do a great job of keeping the weirdness relatively in check and ‘Get Away’ proceeds into a loopy tribal groove for the final section.

‘Darkened Room’ sets a much faster pace and rocks a palpable sense of urgency with distorted snares and pitter-patter of a fragile bass. Vocal bleeps, a siren, atmospheric pads and other various elements are peppered in to create a rich, if undeniably strange, soundscape. Despite the title I wouldn’t advise sitting in a darkened room to this track - you might go insane.

One thing that’s lacking throughout is a convincing bass sound, made more obvious by the vast array of tinny, trebley drum and percussion sounds that dominate the productions. The sense of mood is clearly Ovi M’s strongpoint and plenty of interesting percussion and pad sounds marks him out as a producer to watch, as the care taken with these subdued soundscapes will surely lead to exciting things in the future. It’s not the strongest release otherwise and I can’t say this is staying on my stereo for very long but there’s enough here to warrant a listen and keep an eye on the Canadian producer’s future releases.
