It’s been approximately eight minutes since the world’s least prolific pop star released anything, so we’re all really excited about this one.
You probably guessed from the title of this review, but if not then Rihanna has a new song out, you’ve probably not heard it yet because she doesn’t really get much radio play and she’s not had five number one singles before. She’s should probably get on twitter or at least hire a new PR rep to do something controversial. Until people start taking notice, I guess I’ll just tell you about ‘Diamonds’.
Well, she’s back, she has a new song, it’s called ‘Diamonds’, and its good. That about does it really.
Written by SIA and produced by Stargate, the team behind her singles ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ and ‘What’s My Name’, both former number ones, the new single from her soon to be released record is a fairly middle of the road pop song for the Bajan beauty. Over the past few years the pop sensation has transformed herself and her sound from wild party starting chart toppers such as ‘We Found Love’ to the smooth and silky RnB of ‘Take A Bow’, but this is all a little Lana Del Rey.
Yes, apparently Lana Del Rey isn’t just the inspiration for H&M, but for Rihanna too who seems to be mimicking the disinterested faux emotion of the ‘Born To Die’ singer. It sounds great, it’s perfectly polished and as usual her vocals are note perfect, it’s just not got that idiosyncratic Rihanna feel.
Again with the backing track, it’s fine, it works, it’s all very enticing and gives Rihanna the opportunity to belt out those emotional tones that are entangled with her accent before truly kicking in with the pristine programming. It’s just it never goes far enough in either direction, this isn’t a dance floor filler, but neither is it a knife to the gut, it’s just good.
Obviously I’ve listened to it six thousand times and you will too; it’s Rihanna for Christ’s sake, but whether this will give Rihanna her sixth number one we’ll have to wait and see. Probably still the best pop artist out there, just not as enticing a prospect as she was three albums ago. She probably just needs a good night’s sleep.
