Philophobia // "Wakefield duo whack the amps up and pile on angsty passion"

There's a certain something about musical duo's. They come in many guises ranging from the sublime (to some) see – Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine to the ridiculous (to many) Chas 'n' Dave (altogether now “Whoooo”). It is possibly the simplicity of the two instrument set up that excites listeners, the fact that just two people can produce tunes that sound like they should have been produced by a bank of artists... maybe.

Take the likes of Wakefields The Do's. These guys take just an electric guitar and a drum set, whack the amps up and pile on angsty passion. Unfortunately their set up will probably have people comparing them with the likes of The White Stripes - seeing as they are the most popular riff/beat duo of recent times, a comparison that would be way off mark however. For a kick off sticks-man Matthew O'leary can play the drums, very very well in fact, unlike the toddler beats of skin basher (and alleged skin flick star) Meg White. Secondly, Elliot Oldroyd's jarring riffs are more rooted in Alt-Rock soil rather than Jack White with his blues obsession.

The pairs debut EP Slide follows up nicely to last years self released 'Leave This All Behind / Quick Fix', picking up that sound and fine tuning it to produce four tracks of hard edged, gut punching drumming and jagged visceral riffs.

'Pleased To Meet You' kicks the twelve minutes nicely, with 'jump up' beats and the top three strings of Oldroyds guitar being spanked within an inch of their lives. 'Carousels' has the distinctive vocals come to the fore, a voice of Brian Molko and Jay Reatard'slove child ensues.

This voice melds into a Black Keys-esque tone for 'If That's All You Know' matching the garage blues tinge of the track perfectly. 'Steven The Wasp' wraps up the way too short experience by turning those already straining amps to tube blowing maximum, the timing of the riffs and drum stick destroying pounding giving a lasting impressionon the ears, begging you to give the whole EP another spin, and that is just what you will do. Guaranteed.

A solid showing here then, leaving a salivating mouth in anticipation of a long player.

The Do's – Slide EP is released 12th November
