Despite the fact that every Wiley song sounds exactly the same, the often-proclaimed founding father of grime has managed to enjoy quite a bit of success to date. It is because of one thing every Wiley song may well be the same dulcet rap tones over trippy hip hop beats but they are all as catchy as hell. Who remembers 'Rolex'? Or his latest hit'Heatwave'? Both songs are essentially stripped bare raps but with a bit of added melody that the neutral listener can really latch onto and remember the track by.
'Money Man' has no such melody. In fact, it has nothing at all that a neutral listener can hook onto for a bit of enjoyment. Wiley and his grime crews probably call it underground. Its not. Its just really quite bad.
There really is nothing to this song. It is quintessentially Wiley rapping over the top of a myriad of weird, twisting electronic notes and filters. The music is so dormant it need not even be present. Mark Pritchard is famous for producing roots-driven electro music but he too fails in this single, to produce anything noteworthy. If you want to hear one man rapping nonsensical lyrics with the odd spurt of music but nothing really to excite you then you are quite welcome to this mess.
Unfortunately 'Money Man' offers nothing better. Its a musical version of 'Scar' so considering that the music in 'Scar' is lacking at best, you can probably imagine just how soul destroying this track is. It literally sounds the sound track to a Super Mario game and to imagine Mario jumping off mushrooms is perhaps the only enjoyment you get out of this. The name Wiley used to excite. Even if not a grime fan you knew there would always be something catchy about the music he produced. Now he is just your boring, everyday grime rapper with very little to offer.
