DJ Rap - BulletProof [EP]

DJ Rap - BulletProof [EP]

System Recordings

Hello I'm Kidd SeNsii I happen to be a new member on the AltSounds Team. The first assignment I received would be to review the Brand new DJ Rap BulletProof EP on System Recordings. Now Being a Drum N Bass DJ myself I have always been a fan of the soft melodic vocals and the catchy rhythms put out by the enchanting Charrisa Saverio. Now the following article is a review of the BulletProof E.P. not of the CD itself which I have not yet heard and cannot form an opinion of yet.

Now lets get down to business the Cover art of this particular album is somewhat uncharacteristic of past works of DJ Rap, in the past she tends to have cover art reflecting a happier more colorful image, whereas on this ep it is simply her reaching out to the consumer mysteriously. with just a dark background.

There are 4 sides to this ep on two vinyl (generally what EP means) Side A "BulletProof" I guess the title track starts out very interesting with a half time almost hip hop intro around 90 bpm. Then breaks out into a spacey galactic drum n bass beat. It then continues on to have distorted vocals undoubtedly done by DJ Rap herself. It has a sharp jumpup overcast all the while being shrouded by spacey darkness that you may find in a lot of DnB nowadays.

Side B "Collision" Begins with a Brassy to the point beat. Then in comes Galactic stabs accompanied by a catchy bass line. The break is made up of an almost too familiar sample that any old school dj can pick out simply because of the nostalgia it brings up, but yet it is not it specifically. Though as you come out of the second break it has that wonderful buildup that is ever loved by many junglist kids the kind that simply puts that chill down your spine because of the anticipation of the hard hitting first count accompanied by the catchy sample.

Side C "Insomniac" Starts with a basic jungle DnB riff, breaks out into a bit of distorted industrial guitar kind of sample then in filters the usual dark space DnB measures with the galactic stabs. Then in filters an electric guitar playing a nice catchy industrial riff. The break does the same as the last. The rest of the track kind of carries on the same way.

Side D "Angel Dust" This starts out much more interesting with a sweet rock guitar intro combined with flanger and just enough buildup to melt your Industrial DnB funny bone. The break hits with an almost inspirational or awe kind of significance you would find in an amen track. Yet the track stays level throughout and kind of disappoints at the end by never really peaking as hard as you might've expected.

Overall I give this EP a B rating simply because of the run of the mill or garden variety tricks and effects that are being used ever so commonly nowadays. Although well produced and maybe well thought out the tracks somehow lack that extra oomph and unique creativity that may have boosted it to the A rating. These tracks are however something different from the old school DJ Rap tracks which never failed to provide everyone with that warm fuzzy feeling rather than the rock star industrial burning. In conclusion Charrisa stick with what fits you.
