Coheed and Cambria, what can I say? I have liked this band since "Second Stage Turbine Blade", and I'm not going to stop liking them now. With their major label debut (and their 3rd album), "Good Apollo..." takes a lot of the more poppy elements from their last release and really expands on them. This, on one hand is unfortunate because I really like the darker side of Coheed. On the other hand, it does render some rather catchy tunes.
The album starts with the same basic opening sequence as the previous two albums (just changed a little...this time it's a little more cinematic and string oriented). This is followed by an unusually dark acoustic song, "Always and Never".
Third comes one of my favorite tracks, "Welcome Home". This song is heavier than a lot of what Coheed has done on previous albums. They really utilize the dual guitars and classic rock meets metal tones and style. This song is followed by a few more pop style tunes that I'm not as impressed with...while still good songs, they are just not to my taste as much. Then comes track 8, "Wake Up", which really builds on a lot of what Coheed used to do in the "secret songs" found on their last cd's. It is just a really pretty softer rock song. The 2nd single (released at the same time as "Welcome Home"), "The Suffering" is next. This is a pretty poppy song, but is one of my favorites. The rest of the album plays out, but with nothing standing out to me. I don't dislike any thing on this album, but there are only a few real stand out tracks. All in all, I think it's a great album for Coheed's major label debut, and am not disappointed in my purchase. Yet, if you aren't a fan of Coheed from their previous works, you probably won't find anything that changes your mind with this album...but if you like them, then you won't stop just yet!
