Milemarker have been MIA for the past 3 years. Where were they? What were they doing? Apparently they were writing some of the greatest songs of their career. Formed in 1997, Milemarker cranked 5 albums and 6 US tours, 4 European tours and a trip to Japan by the end of 2002. Their sound ran the gamut of unrestrained art rock, dancing from screaming metal to electro-punk unapologetically. It is no surprise the band needed a break and it served them well as they have now returned with their 5th full-length album “Ominosity” on Eyeball Records. It seems that Milemarker have finally acheived what they had been trying to get across since the late 90s. They brilliantly combine their influences and past experiences and even include everyone that has ever played under the Milemarker name. Original members Ben Davis, Dave Laney and Al Burian all play on the record, as well as drummers Noah Leger and Tony Lazzara, and the rest of the extended Milemarker family.
For anyone who has been a fan of Milemarker since the beginning, then you may certainly rejoice at this release as it is by far the best Milemarker to date. They lose none of their communal ethic, nor their insistance on pushing the envelope and challenging all preconceptions and standards for their genre. Their live show is undoubtedly as exhilirating and exhausting as it has been in the past, and they intend to prove it as they set out on their US tour next month. For those unfamiliar with Milemarker, what you can expect is a very innovative and ambitious rock record that will tap into just about everything you enjoy as a rock fan. The first single, Food Chain, is a stand out electro-indie rock track that finds its way into your subconscious, although it fits into none of the parameters and standards for what makes a catchy pop song. That, however, is Milemarkers style. It makes no sense and you can’t pinpoint what about it makes it good. Perhaps it is not one element, but the collection of all elements that keep their release Ominosity a fun listen and interesting from beginning to end with absolutely no lulls.
