Edward Scissorhands - The Musical

Edward Scissorhands the musical! Now that sounds fun. So we purchased some tickets for the 17th of March, good old St. Patrick's Day. They were here performing for four nights at the Millenium Center in Cardiff (Wales).

So we started off the night by having some drinks at the pub close to the center. Not to many though because I didn't want to pee like every 10 minutes. You know once you break the seal especilly with beer that's it. It's over.

We start walking from the pub to where we needed to be. As an approaching car makes a turn it runs over a full bottle of orange juice and splashes me all over my back. OMG! My hair was soaked my skirt, boots, jacket, everything. Of course I totally was a shield for Chris, not a drop on him. Isn't St. Patrick's day supposed to be lucky or something?!!

Anyway, after moaning about the situation and cleaning myself off we realize that we only have like 5 minutes to get to the center. And we're off! We just made it and and sat down at our fantastic seats, and it begins.

The story is pretty much the same as the movie by Tim Burton. Who, in my eyes, is a genius with a wild imagination and fortunately decided to put his crazy ideas on paper. For those who don't know the story, it goes a little bit like this....

This gothic witty fairytale tells the story of a boy played by the ingenious Johnny Depp in the original. He was created by an extraordinary inventor who dies leaving him alone and unfinished. With only scissors for hands, Edward must find his place in a strange new suburban world where the well-meaning community struggle to see past his appearance to the innocence and gentleness within. To top it off he encounters a strange feeling called love for the daughter (Winona Ryder in the movie) of the woman who brings him home.

There some slight changes that were made, but only someone who has seen the movie more than a few times could tell. All you can hear is the gentle footsteps of constant dancing and the awesome orchestra below. The music which is one of the best parts was originally composed by Danny Elfman. The same man who has wriiten the music for the Simpsons, Futurama, and loads of other things.

The costumes were well made with vivid colors. Edward's was obviously the best and worn very well by the actor. It consisted of many pieces of worn-down leather tightly fitted. The set and the lights were stunning, and I couldn't get my eyes off the stage. There were so many fab actors and so much to look at.

Anyway, when Edward realizes that he can never cope in the real world with scissors as hands he goes back to his castle and gives up love because he is afraid he will hurt people. But every Christmas he slashes away at a immense piece of ice to make it snow in the town where it never had before. When this happened they actually dropped down some fake snowflakes onto the audience. Nice touch. Then the whole crew received a star applause.

The ending is always very somber, for me at least, but I was left satisfied. It made me forget for a while that I was previously drenched with orange juice. I would recommend this to anyone if musicals is your kind of thing. And if you haven't seen the movie go and experience it for your self because it is legendary!!
