Maryland is not known for a huge scene, or any real standout bands in the “bigger” hardcore scene, BUT the few bands that do get attention are well worth it. Ruiner has made a record, released with some gritty and comic like art for 1917 records (a label to be reckoned with, nothing but quality from these guys) a while ago. After listening quite a few times, I realized that Ruiner made such a great record. By going a simpler way, and pulling off a sound akin to American Nightmare’s early work, and all the emotion of strained and honest vocals, great gang sing-alongs, and a fast pace set with great old school breakdowns at just the right times, I am surprised the finger pointing of yester year has not caught on. The only complaint is that the record ends as abruptly as it hooks you, and that’s my problem with it. From a great intro to this record on “Once Loved”, to a great showing of hardcore sensibility on the last track “Six by Six”, heartfelt lyrics, and just damn good hardcore, you are a fool to not get this. 9.0/10
