Spitfire – Self-Help

O god, Norma Jean and Scarlet members team up for a cluster **** of a release. To my own bias, I never was that into Spitfire. To be fair with this review, I haven’t really been into Norma Jean either. When I heard the first track, “Meat Market” on the Goodfellow Myspace page, I was really intrigued as to how good the REST of the record would turn out. To my surprise, it was like a bunch of Scarlet riffing with Norma Jean time-signatures and aped Botch riffs. The standout portions of this release are simply a SUPERB lyrical content, and some great parts, but they just don’t add up as a whole. Its just not put together in a way that makes a lot of sense. Now if that was the point, then I must have missed it. I must also point out that vocally it is also great, and the production is well done, and the art is pretty well done and “deep and interpretative”, or something like that. I did enjoy this release more than other Spitfire releases, and the last Norma Jean record. I think that more could be done here, and hopefully in time, it will come out, as it should. This record was a bunch of good and great ideas that just fell short. 6.5/10
