Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third

Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third
The one-sheet for this album described this band as The Mars Volta meets the Super Furry Animals. As I love both of those bands I instantly put this CD into my player. The album starts off with a song named "Aeropause II" which begins so quietly that I thought the CD wasn't playing so I turned up the stereo and it is just a slow fade up intro that builds to some upbeat instrumental stuff with cool etherial bendy guitar riffs. This instrumentaion lasts for 5 minutes and is really the intro to track 2 entitled "Goshens Remains". It starts with a female vocal that seems pretty high in the mix. The rest of this song is pretty weird and I'm not really sure what they are singing about. The production is good and there is a male vocalist too so I am pretty interested at this point as to whats coming next.

Track 3 "Apprentice of the Universe" is halfway through before I realize that it is a different song. Seems like this album is going to be like a one song journey where everything blends into the other. I like this idea though and it helps you to forget about what you're listening to and just escape.

Trck 4 has a more obvious transition but it is still a good flow. The song titled "The Bright Ambassadors of Morning" is 11:46 long which I am keen to check out. I love Tool so am quite happy listen to a 11-15 minute song without any worry as long as it'a good and keeps my attention. The chorus of this is awesome with about 5-7 voices singing different stuff all harmonising with one another. It's most definitely this bands Beach Boys moment.

It's kind of hard to describe Pure Reason Revolution's sound to people but it's kind of like Scissor Sisters meets the Beach Boys with some BT style production work whilst rocking out at certain points and showing of the guitarists skills. A pretty poor explanation but hopefully that will explain the sheer originality that I am listening to. This band may not end up being my favourite band of all time HOWEVER at least they aren't copying and trying to be their influences. They have taken all of that and made their own sound. The 11:46 actually goes by without it feeling like that long. The song has all the substance to be that long.

Track 5 "Nimos and Tambos" has a much more poppy sound until the chorus and then it' back to their unique theatrical sound. At this point of listening to the album I get confused because the CD says theres only 9 tracks but the album cover shows 12. I look into this more carefully and Track 6 is made up of Track 6(1) and Track 6(2). So two tracks named into two parts but that create one song. Pretty unique idea.

6(1) is called "Voices in Winter" and it's a nice mellow song with the male vocalist doing the lead which is a nice change from the female vox for a moment. I hear a female vocal coming in and this sounds to me like it is changing into track 6(2) "In The Realms of the Divine". It actually was the end of 6(1) and it turns out that there is a clear line as to where the second song comes in. 6(2) is some crazy ELO meets Queen song. It;s quite upbeat and quite rocking and I am liking this the most so far off the whole album even though it's pretty short.

Track 7 "Bullitts Dominae" starts off instrumental and is quite pretty. This band has a very unique sound and with every song that plays you know it is them. The album artwork is pretty cool and unique too. I don't see me being in a mood where I would want to put this on like I do with some other bands HOWEVER I am enjoying it. It's a nice change from the similar and boring stuff I have been getting lately and it gives me faith that there are people out there still trying to push boundaries whether it be successful or not.

This album must have taken a long time to perfect. Being a music producer I know how gruelling production can be particularly when you have 12 minute songs but these guys are produced VERY well. It's produced by Paul Northfield and Pure Reason Revolution AND Chloe the female singer plays bass in the band too. That's cool because for some reason in my head I imagined her to just be a singer in the band.

Track 8 also has (2) parts. I can't really discuss these as I have just been listening and didn't realize I was almost at the end of track 8. That's whats so good about this band is they seem to transition tracks really well. It's like as if their album has been mixed by one of the worlds best DJ's or something because you don't really ever notice the change, especially when you're reading the album cover.

The last track "Ambassadors Return" is their biggest Epic yet. This beast is 13:13 long and I am excited to check it out and to how this album ends. This track fades out at 5:21 like the album has ended and I am kind of dissapointed that it wasn't a 13 minute epic like I had anticipated. Seems like they have a hidden track on here although if you listen to music on a computer it's not very hidden is it! The hidden track is almost not even worth being there but hey, each to their own.

Overall this album is an OK listen but it's not something that you will find yourself coming back to. It would be cool to have on as background music and definitely keeps you entertained. Unfortunately though I really don't see me ever listening to it again as nothing really ever grabbed my attention wholeheartedly. The best thing about this whole CD is that this band are original and aren't attepting to be anyone else. I respect that and am glad there are bands still out there pushing the boundaries of music.

Super Furry Animals meets The Mars Volta this is not but it's still worth checking out if you find yourself stumbling across it in your local music store.
