So what the hell is a band supposed to do when they choose to operate in a genre that’s been overdone for nearly 10 years and only has a handful of qualifiers to begin with? What can a band possibly do to stand out from the crowd or bring some originality to the table when embracing the ‘pop punk’ style so unapologetically? Well, if you’re Lucky Boys Confusion, you don’t try to do anything at all. Their songwriting talents, ear for melody, and interesting vocal performances from their frontman Kaustubh Pandav are what originally landed them a deal with Elektra and resulted in a semi-hit ‘Hey Driver.’ After being lost in the major label shuffle, the boys in LBC seemed to have no problem picking up where they left off. Continuing to tour through the region, and now releasing an EP titled ‘How to Get Out Alive’ on their own label Townstyle, they’re proving that these boys lean more toward Lucky than Confused.
Although luck plays little part when you’re as talented as this group of songwriters, I couldn’t resist the play on words. They were asking for it. How to Get Out Alive, while short, is absolutely perfect for what it is. Featuring 5 of the most ‘summer-appropriate’ songs released in some time, this fully loaded EP is just begging to be blasted in a car stereo while tearing through town, granted you won’t get very far before the cd is over. With 4 solid originals and a killer Dramarama cover, How to Get Out Alive ties up the loose ends left when they were ‘laid off’ from their major label deal. This is most clearly discussed in the song ‘Like Rats from a Sinking Ship.’ It’s possible that the other songs also discuss it, but that one was definitely the most obvious. I’ll be sure to ask them in the upcoming interview (keep an eye out!).
Now touring with Bowling For Soup, Lucky Boys Confusion are showing that you don’t need a major label to kick some ass. This EP is quite good and somehow avoids sounding cookie-cutter or generic or cliché or overdone, despite being so deeply rooted in pop-punk. When most bands would have crumbled, LBC stuck together and they’re cranking out hits with their unique sound and clever style. If anything is clear about Lucky Boys Confusion, it’s that this band has chemistry, and that translates in their live performances as much as it does in their songwriting. Chemistry cannot be bought or sold…it’s the only genuine mark of a great band…and they have it.
