Jet Lag Gemini's sound explodes from the very beginning of this EP; loud, aggresive and begging to differ in such a way as to make this release one of the most refreshing and different sounds I've heard in a long time. The craft applied to the collection of songs here is very straightforward, the onus is on pop-punk, this is what shines through mostly, but fortunately it's not the overly familiar sound many bands have adopted in an attempt at stardom; Jet Lag Gemini re-capture all that's good about the genre, and, laced with new elements borrowed from other genres, combine it all to create a distinctive and catchy sound.
It's hard to fully do the band justice in words; as with so many other quality bands, hearing is believing. They are a world away from all the current bands who juxtapose two totally different genres to "invent" random sub-genres in a vain attempt to sound original, there is clearly a well thought contrived sound, of course, the sound is sees punk and metal juxtaposed to a certain extent; but it's done tastefully. Everything here just sounds right, as if it's meant to be; it all just sounds so much better for that total conviction in the sounds. It's rare to hear such diversity and quality in a 6 song release, Jet Lag Gemini have certainly achieved this.
As for the songs themselves, there is little else to be said, the basic elements are set in stone and once you've gotten used to the structure then the songs have a familiar feel. The real beauty here is in the subtle differences offered throughout; opening song 'Don't Leave Me Hanging' is the best possible start to this EP; it leaves such a good vibe after the final chord fades out, this is opening song perfection, the sort of song that makes you want to hit repeat and listen all day. The tone is perfectly set here, and next song 'Geared For Action' offers a nice alternative to this song, chilled out in comparison and the release already has me hooked. So far it's singalong stuff and the choruses will easily find their way into your head and stay there for a while.
'From Lip To Lip' is also a slight departure from the previous song, as I mentioned previously; the diversity in the collection of songs is a real strength, 'Ready. Set. No' is the most typically conformist pop-punk song on offer, the chorus is a catchy melée of guitars and vocals; instantly memorable. In stark contrast, 'Happy Earth Day' contains the most metal style riffs throughout the song. Closing track 'They're Made Out Of Meat' builds into another typical pop-punk chorus. Overall it's easy to get hooked to this release, Jet Lag Gemini have certainly done enough right to beg the question: why is it only 6 songs? I personally look forward to a full-length release; based on this offering, there is a lot to come from this band.
