Falling Up is a band from Albany, Oregon who fancy themselves as ‘Alternative/Rock/Christian’ courtesy of Myspace’s three-genre system. They are signed to Tooth and Nail Records based in Seattle, and the number of their line-up seems to be in dispute; on their Myspace, they claim five members, in their biography they mention four, and on the website intro photo and music video for their release ‘Moonlit’ they sport six. Their newest release titled Exit Lights, set for September 12, 2006 is an album of remixes of songs mainly from their last release Dawn Escapes, some from first album Crashings and some new tracks.

I gave the album a listen, and realized that a review of this album without any prior familiarity with their originals might not be a very good review. I gave a few original tracks a listen, and overall I must say the remixes kept my attention better. Imagine Bush’s Deconstructed, and you are on the right track. I found that I quite liked Exit Lights for what it was and how much I really liked the remixes over the originals. Where the originals were a bit hard rock, the remixes were a bit funkier, a bit more attention grabbing. Some songs reminded me of the music of Linkin Park, some the music of Ratatat, and the vocals were…typical. While very talented, the vocal lines and his voice just did not stand out in anyway or distinguish themselves.

I know being a Christian band tends to put some off, but as far as I could tell, there really wasn’t a very religious overtone to any of the songs. I didn’t hear any dirty lyrics and it seemed it was mostly just internal conflict and the like for content. I liked it, and if I had been given their previous album to review, I would probably have given a more negative review. However, since being remixed, I think it enhances their songs and their talent, and gives their song a bit more depth than just being any old alternative/hard rock band. If you like the edge of hard rock, then tryout their old stuff first, but for those who might like a bit of synth/electronic sound, give Exit Lights your first listen. I believe it really will pull people more to their older albums once they find a love for the songs on Exit Lights.
