I don’t really care for Slipknot and I don’t really care for Stone Sour. I saw them play a show once and honestly thought they had been outperformed by the local opener. I didn’t bother (pun intended) to listen to Stone Sour’s last record simply because the single annoyed me so much. It’s like do we really need another band that sounds like this? Honestly? I was asked to review their follow-up album ‘Come What(ever) May’ and I have to say I was a little surprised. First of all, Stone Sour is more metal than their singles imply. Why they push the ballads off the heavy records is beyond me. I guess it’s just easier to swallow. The single off of this record has been ‘Through Glass’ or ‘Bother 2.0’...whatever you want to call it.
The second single from this album is ‘30/30-150,’ a much better selection as it its more indicative of what else is on the record. The music is more aggressive with Corey Taylor keeping his vocals heavy without getting too growly and Slipknot-ish. ‘30/30-150’ is a pretty good track and definitely made me pay attention to the rest of the album. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much more on there that was worth listening to, aside from the song ‘Socio’ which stepped away from their ‘formula.’
Everyone has been saying Stone Sour are proving that they’re more than just a sideproject..and I think that’s valid. However, there really isn’t much on this album that cannot be found on other albums. It’s very middle of the road modern rock with a few unique touches a flare here and there, but the album is wholly forgettable and probably not worth a purchase. But, thanks to technology, you can save yourself about 11 bucks and grab the few good tracks, which in this case would be the singles and ‘Socio.’ I’ll rate this record a 3…for the 3 decent songs and $3 the album is worth
