I’m not gonna lie about it. I was 2 years old in 1983 and The Glove’s album ‘Blue Sunshine’ managed to be released, have no mainstream success, and capture a small cult following all without my knowing. Personally, I blame my parents for not playing this LSD inspired psychedelic disco goth porn while tucking me in at night. Nothing lulls a baby to sleep better than tripped out slasher tales, and that’s a scientific fact.
Seriously though, this album has been deemed a ‘classic’ but I had really never heard of it. It’s no one’s fault, I simply missed the boat. However, thanks to Rhino’s dedication to reissues (I love Rhino), I am now able to hear what I missed so many years ago. Upon investigation, I found out The Glove was a one album Cure/Siouxsie and the Banshees side project fronted by some unknown dancer. The ‘fronted by a dancer’ part had me curious, especially since after listening it’s pretty clear this girl is definitely not a singer. As it turns out, Robert Smith was not allowed to lend vocals to projects outside of The Cure because of contractual red tape.
There isn’t a whole lot I can say about this album. It’s really ****ing weird and I can see why there is a cult following for it, however without knowing who was behind it and the whole story of the project, I don’t think I’d really care for it at all. I guess it’s good for what it is, but I don’t really know because I am not quite sure what it is and I don’t know if there are enough other projects in the same vein to compare it to. There’s no doubt that a fanbase for this work can be found, but for me, personally, I don’t really get it.
Long story short, if you’re a hardcore fan of The Cure or the Banshees, then you should check this record out. It should satisfy your need to own everything they have ever touched and also includes a ton of bonus material, like two copies of the album, one with that chick and one with Robert Smith on vocals from the demo sessions and a ton of remixes. It’s a great collection and a killer reissue. Another solid piece from the Rhino vaults…now if only I was into the music….
(album rated a 7: points for the completeness of the collection, packaging, and tale of interest.)
