Hard Rock the way it should be
I once read somewhere that the band Finger Eleven was unable to find a record contract up in their native Canada because they were too “hard rock” for the northern folk. So they headed down to the states and found Wind Up Records, most famous for signing Creed. Canada now has produced another hard rock band, which seems to have also gone looking for deals in the states.
Priestess, a four piece from Montreal, are some very good hard rockin’ Canadians. Signed to BMG Sony, I think they maybe found the same problem; that, or they are just too good for the labels in the north. They are pure hard rock, no gimmicks and no tricks, at least that is how they market themselves, and I think they speak the truth. Their songs are clean and catchy, and leave plenty of room for head banging should the listener choose to shake their head about.
I like the singer’s voice. It’s got a rough quality to it, and really compliments the music. Also, there are a few guitar lines in there that really catch your ear. The guitars sound original as well; it doesn’t sound like they are recycling riffs from one song to another. Drums and bass are tight as well, and the songs leave plenty of room for all the musicians to show off every now and then.
“Everything That You Are,” “No Real Pain” and “Blood” have a punk element to them, with driving riffs and pounding drums, while songs like “Time Will Cut You Down” and “Run Home” create a darker atmosphere and drive the tunes back into the more metal side of rock.
Overall, it’s good song writing and the musicians are talented, but I can’t help feeling like I have heard this sort of music too much before. While it is exactly what the band puts forth (being no frills rock) I find there is nothing spectacular about them myself. These guys are not for the metal or hardcore kids. However, if Sevendust or Corrosion of Conformity is your cup of tea, then check these guys out. If you like good ole hard rock, then check them out too.
