Britt Black - Blackout

Female Fronted grab you by the balls rock!

The mere mention of girl power probably conjures images of the Spice Girls to your brain. However, with this band the only Pop is the sound of your eardrum bursting from the hard rock of this girl fronted band. Britt Black is something of a musical prodigy. At 10 she co-wrote the song “Violence” on the Bif Naked album I Bificus. At 13, she fronted a teen all girl rock band, which had a song featured on the Dude Where Is My Car Original Soundtrack. At 18, she was the lead guitarist for the backing band for Bif Naked. And at 21, is now fronting her own band. Wow…

Britt Black is raw, clever, and not to mention very beautiful. This British Columbian has certainly made a name for herself in the Canadian hard rock scene and looks with high hopes to become even more famous in the American market. Her Myspace boasts that she is “in the vein of Velvet Revolver, The Ramones and any band with that straight-ahead NY/London rock brashness.” Personally, I think her own style is more rock than punk, as this leads one to believe, but you can certainly hear the influence.

The guitar is simple, the vocals beautiful and harsh, and the backing musicians full of all that talent that backing musicians tend to have. The songs overall are sometimes catchy, but I felt one or two to be quite annoying by the end. I found I really liked some songs, like “In Your Face” and her cover of The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary,” but also that some songs just got tedious and annoying by the end like “Sick and Tired.” Thankfully, there loads more good songs than annoying ones.

You can tell she will go far with fans of girl rock, and there’s even a hinting of becoming bigger in the rock circles. Veruca Salt fans should give it a listen. However, this girl holds her own, and won’t need the support of the girl rockers to get ahead. Her voice is strong enough to hold up to fellow male rockers and her attitude says she could probably take a couple in a fight, all without breaking a nail.
