There was a time when being involved in rock music and being ‘heavy’ or ‘loud’ was considered to be a bad thing, an evil thing. Right across America’s Midwest there will still be people, devout Christians who would have you believe that rock music were the spawn of the Devil. Underoath are one of the many Christian bands right now who are appealing to the mainstream heavy rock fans and also maintaining their beliefs.
As a band they demonstrate a level of commitment that makes almost every other bands efforts look totally lame and pointless. Having written this year’s third album ‘Define the Great Line’ whilst on the road; they have won over many fans simply by being in the right place at the right time and always having a busy touring schedule. They are one of the many bands around right now who are not afraid to demonstrate their faith, though Christian-rock they are not; sadly this fact escapes many people.
For the plain simple truth Underoath are one of the best alternative bands around right now. Though often labelled screamo by the ignorance of stereotypes and categorisation, they couldn’t be further from the image promoted by the popular emo movement, more concerned with fashion than music. Owing to their heart on sleeve, faith bearing ideals; Underoath deal in simple, straightforward addictive music. There is no illusion and no ulterior motive of global domination, this is what it is and that’s what makes it all the better.
This single, ‘In Regards to Myself’ is taken straight from their previously mentioned third album; in fact it’s one of the reasons that album has been so well received. This is the opening track on the full length. Underoath utilise their classic grand entry, from the sound of a film projector into a brutal riff, the guitar mash, collide and combine to provide one of the most violent and dynamic musical tracks they possess in their artillery.
The dual vocals have always been such a bonus for this band, front man Spencer Chamberlain’s high pitched scream (almost squeal in parts) combining wonderfully with the melodic singing of drummer Aaron Gillespie to really give this track a brilliantly epic feel. Quiet and loud induce in an orgy of sound and the track is all the stronger for it; when you hear this single you’ll be left so totally blown away that you will want to hear the rest of the album.
