If like me, you have grown up with Drive Thru you will know that they are one of the most consistent labels in the game for releasing better and better bands. They are the godfathers of the scene and are not afraid to shy away from the fact that they are partial to a bit of catchy pop rock. And if you are all honest with yourselves, you know that deep down, you are to. With the likes of New Found Glory and Hellogoodbye flying the flag high for the label, Richard and Stefanie have set themselves a standard they still have not failed to surpass.
Self Against City are one of the bands that have blown the competition away. I can honestly say I have listened to the album over for a few times now. So much so, there is a chance that my computer may soon reject all the other music it plays. With huge soaring choruses and some of the most uplifting sounds you will hear in a long time I will be very surprised if these boys are not on every stereo and in every pair of headphones by the end of the year.
For the first time in a few days it’s actually sunny outside and as much of a cliché that this is going to be, this is the perfect soundtrack for the summer. It’s almost as if it was made with long drives and sunny skies in mind.
The tone and feel for the rest of the 11 tracks is set by the massive opener “Becoming A Monster”. With the worlds biggest sing-a-long chorus it’s hard to not find yourself singing along by the end of it. Trust me on that one! The big sing-a-long-out-loud vibe does not end after that though. It continues bouncing from track to track. It’s almost as if you are compelled to. You can’t stop yourself from tapping your feet and humming along.
I have to admit that this is one of the most addictive albums I’ve heard in long time. With different styles presented all the way through, you can tell that SAC is the type of band that world domination in mind when it comes to their songs. From the Modest Mouse-esc feel of “Tequila Moonlight” to the R&B groove of “Smooth Silver” and even the atmospheric sound of the last song “Back To Our Innocence” it is clear that the boys are not afraid to try and be different and try to break out of the carbon copy musical world a lot of bands fail to escape from.
If these songs are not over played and running around in your head for weeks to come after you first press play then there is something wrong with you. I’m off back to track one now. “Let's take this all the way, Woah oh oho, Woah oh oho………”
