 MNEMOSYNE – EXCEPT FOR ACCESS By: Fridae Mattas Listening to this EP’S first track ‘Wrong Direction’ so far so good, the music sounds great all the instruments in harmony everything fits perfectly but that was a huge lie, I knew it was too good to be true! As soon as the lead singer drops the verse the shit hit the fan, Kev Penny sounded as if he was struggling to sing over the music, losing his breath on every track of this four track EP. The screaming was excellent but the vocals on the verses and choruses are sordid he should stick to screaming or take some serious vocal lessons (Lessons may not even help this kid), dude you’re holding the band back. The track itself is noble musically speaking, the lyrics are not too bad but they were empty there was not enough heart and soul, no belief in his own lyrics. The music starts in with some electro synth drums then a guitar for two seconds until the other instruments come crashing in transitioning smoothly intermingling with precision. The music overshadows the lyrics and vocalist by far in this track as in every other track on this EP. Mnemosyne (Greek Mνημοσύνη, pronounced Mnee- mo- seenee) (sometimes confused with Mneme or compared with Memoria) was the personification of memory in Greek mythology. This Titaness was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus and the mother of the Muses by Zeus. Above is the definition of the bands name, these five lads from Bath UK are: Vox: Kev, Guitar: Dayv, Bass: Craig, Synths: Jym, Drums: Pepler. They have absolutely nothing on their ‘Myspace’ about them nor is there any press anywhere how do you expect to be remembered? From the sound of their tunes they better play one crazy live show because the music with the current vocalist just does not cut it! I really wanted to like this band, I do like the sound of the instruments minus dude-faces’ vocal chords when he’s singing. Always amazes me to see that every band who is not metal claims to be metal, even the so called metal gods have softened their sound. Just because your music is aggressive has a couple of crazy guitar riffs, smashing percussion and some screaming, does not mean you are metal nor does it mean you are thrash, glam or punk, honestly categories suck period! Music is music you either like it or you don’t, why there is such a need for pretty packages is beyond me. People make such a big deal about different views and opinions; this world has too much unnecessary censorship focusing on the wrong things continually ignoring what really is important, many narrow minds always fighting over territory, money and power so sad. Back to the band, well to tell you the truth not worth my time and yours to jibber on about Mnemosyne’s ‘Except For Access’, the production of the EP is extremely ghetto, I mean the ghetto box I have to use until my laptop comes back could probably produce higher quality sounds. Did the producer not edit any of the tunes and are you all tone deaf? In majority of the tracks (that’s three out of four) lead vocals goes out of key, flat a lot of the time and sounds like a nervous lamb who can't keep up ‘bah bah black sheep have you any wool’ stick to the yelling! To the rest of the band, get a new lead singer but keep this dude for screamage capiche! Maybe then you won’t have to beg for shows on Myspace.
