It’s only February but already A Weather have produced one of the surprise gems of the year, with their debut full-length release Cove. Full of hushed vocals, warm electric pianos and quiet rolling drums that sit in the background yet ever present at the same time. A Weathers subtlety and intricate approach create a beautiful and reflective listen. The front cover artwork captures the mood of the record perfectly… a lone figure (it’s actually an elephant but we’ll bypass that fact) stood at the edge of the sea looking out to the horizon. A Weather draw you in to their world on these flawless 9 indie-folk songs, a world of blissful forgetfulness, one in which you can completely lose yourself in. Vocal duties on the album are shared between Aaron Gerber and drummer Sarah Winchester. The balance between the two is just right, often playing off against each other, and the overall sound at times akin to The Magic Numbers at their introspective best. Standout track for me is Screw Up Your Courage, the light drumming shuffles beautifully along against the piano, and the vocals (barely whispers) sound so good!! Oh My Stars is another gorgeous song, dealing with the thought of things we have planned for our lives never happening. The vocals are more in unison on this song and they sound just as good together as apart. Cove is a real treat and highly recommended. Released early March so keep your eyes peeled!!
