Veara – The Walls Have Ears
Wisteria Records April 7, 2008, 05:55 PM The name of the album ‘The Walls Have Ears’ caught my attention straightaway and then finding out that this 5 piece band is all male expect for a female drummer. I thought the line up was different and it made me want to listen to the album more.
One thing I was not expected after hearing the first two songs was the synth sounds in the ‘Kiss It Goodbye’ seeing as they class themselves as Rock and Pop Punk. I can hear those genres in these songs but I don’t know where the synth comes into it. Fort 20 seconds towards the end of the song, vocals, backing vocals and clapping can only be heard giving the song an unexpected structure. Knowing this does make the band more appealing.
I particularly like the drums in ‘So Far So Good’, Brittany has managed to use the kit and rhythms in the right places. The crazy guitar pick slide sending the song into the chorus is a nice touch. Towards the end of the song, the band breaks out into a ‘jam’ if you want to call it that. Slow calming guitar riffs with a synth spazzing out if the background underneath the simple drum beat gradually builds up bar by bar to finally end the song going straight into the next song ‘You’re So Off My Top 8’
Alone, the song ‘You’re So Off My Top 8’ can relate back to Myspace. The vocals from Kerry are a bit all over the place at the beginning of the song but soon settle. Throughout the song the music is full, constant guitar riffs and drum fills with nice kick sounds gives you a taster of their skills.
The penultimate song on the album, ‘February Skins’ starts off with sharp acoustic guitar sounds before drums, bass and electric guitar starts above it. The chorus introduces an unexpected synth sound just to give the chorus that flare and it has worked very well. The bass line stands out in this song too; the low dirty sound stays like this throughout the song but again, works well giving it more to the song. Before hitting into one of the final chorus, the guitar slide and distorted sounds from the guitars makes this song different to the other songs on the album.
This is a good band; people will probably think they are just another Pop Punk band. But if you listen closely I think you’ll find they are more than that.
