The Maybes? - Talk About You (single)

Haven’t we been here before? It’s a little hard to believe that this is The Maybes? debut single from their debut album, unfortunately first impression throws this straight into the category of the over saturated UK indie scene, it’s bursting at the seams already and so many more bands are throwing their individual takes in all the times. Bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks have already been there and done this and subsequently boosted the public’s desire for the genre.
According to the band ‘Talk About You’ is “a powerful driving anthem of modern day relationship breakdown”, fair comment, the title features prominently throughout the chorus, and for the part the dynamic of the song plays along then it’s easy to call it “powerful” and “driving”. The first thing that draws you in is the drum beat intro, then everything just drops into place, and a lush, echoing lead guitar line really provides the momentum for most of the song. The melodies are enjoyable too, it’s easy to get reeled in by this, so far then the song ticks all the boxes of the genre.
The Maybes? do actually have an ace up their sleeve here, because they don’t actually sound like all the other bands, with more appeal of bands such as Kings of Leon or The Magic Numbers; they may not immediately jump to the forefront or grab the public’s attention. Despite that, they have enough good ideas and enough of a staying power to probably outlast many of their peers. As far as it goes, this is nice, simple, indie-rock, easy to listen to, easy to digest, easy to love. You get the feeling from listening that this is all their trying to do, write music which they like, which they thinks sounds good and deals with common issues in life. The song almost makes relationships feel like fun, it’s like drifting into a dream world, and for just over three minutes it’s easy to get lost, and for that alone their worth checking out.
