Haverfordwest’s Winch House quite literally smack you in the face straight away, this, their debut EP, ‘In All Seriousness’ was produced by Chris Maguire at Screamadelica Studios in Cardiff. It’s definitely a good thing that it smacks you in the face, the quality of the production and the band’s irresistable hooks throughout means that they instantly step above the quality of most things on offer in the local music scene.
There really isn’t much else you need to know, like the band get straight to business its probably best that I do the same here so you can appreciate the real quality available. A barrage of guitars and drums welcomes opener ‘You Took Me Too Seriously’, it’s the almost obligatory drop out for the verse, but just as you think this is going to be a cliché or journey through everything you’ve heard before the rhythm will change almost at random and you’re being carried off into the world of Winch House; where popular culture counts for more than overly serious lyricism: “honesty is defo not the best policy.” You get the impression their just out to have fun and enjoy their music, laughter at the end of the track probably agrees with this.
‘Woah (Get Away From Me)’ starts with a slightly dirty guitar intro and begins to sound like it’s going to erupt into a massive rock classic, it’s soon getting faster and rolling along, the rhythm changes continue to intrigue but all the while the whole concoction is just pulling you in further and further. For a pop-punk band they do get quite intimate with the details, dynamically you can’t fault them, there’s a bit of everything going on; it’s a bit Fall Out Boy at times, but it does go beyond that and offers a lot more than face value. ‘What’s a Dead Body Between Friends’, is definitely an interestingly titled song, it’s an epic song, Winch House’s melodic qualities shining through in abundance. ‘We’re Breaking Away’ gets us back into the fast pop-punk sing along groove that’s become so accustomed in just three tracks. At this point it’s tempting to say this is one of the stronger songs, but with just five songs and all of them being top class then it would be unfair to single one out above the rest.
‘Sweet Taste Of Summer’ is a sweet, epic, almost ballad-type song, a brilliant way to finish off the EP, the piano introduction is definitely a high point, merging with an electronic beat in a most unusual fashion, it all sounds so natural, so right. The song just flows into a massive, awesome beast of a song. Classic, epic, soaring, totally sing along material quality, it builds and builds all the way through, differing from the other four songs in many ways but retaining the same qualities which have already endeared themselves from just this briefest of introductions. It’s really hard to fault Winch House throughout this EP, Winch House meet world, they may soon be leaving Haverfordwest long behind. The only thing which is preventing me giving this album a perfect ten is the feeling that this is only the beginning and they have so much more to offer in the future, watch this space.
