The Outline are finally seeing the light of the day in the UK thanks to 30:30 Recordings. This is the first single taken from the album ‘You Smash It, We’ll Build Around It’. The Outline are an experimental band so it’s always going to be tough to get a great idea for the band as a whole from one song. Having heard the album previous to reviewing this single then it’s fair to say ‘Sloppy Drunk’ is probably a good choice.

Overall, it’s a simple song, starting off with aggressive, choppy vocals it emerges as something much bigger and more complex in the chorus, where guitars are joined by synths in abundance. It’s really difficult to describe how the song manages to evolve the way it does, two bars of bass drums and bass guitar on the beat is how it translates, though you do end up overlooking that and drifting away into the music. Before the second chorus, the bass is joined by a muted guitar, the song almost takes on medley qualities after this chorus as the lyric “something beautiful” repeats over and over a really lush guitar and drum combo.

Then we’re treated to a chorus with just electronic elements before the whole things bursts back into life with “something beautiful” and then a heavy guitar riff along with drums sees us into the beat before the end. Just like that, 2 minutes and 27 seconds of your life have passed by, leaving you feeling a little happier, slightly perplexed and definitely wanting more. The Outline have definitely chosen a good first single from the album, mixing all these elements into two and a half minutes of music is an achievement in itself, this is definitely worth a listen.
