Plain White T’s have been around for a decade now, though most people hadn’t even heard of them prior to the massive success of last single ‘Hey There Delilah’, they’re following this up with the release of the 2nd single from their 2006 album ‘Every Second Counts’. Perhaps aptly titled, ‘Our Time Now’ is a straight forward offering, bursting into life with an instantly catchy “oh oh, oh oh-oh” you just get the feeling this is going to be catchy and radio friendly.
That same little vocal part comes in before the chorus, which replaces the muted guitars of the verse with a gradual strumming of distorted guitars, ticking all the boxes so far, then. There’s not really a lot else to say about this single, it plays it safe, is blatantly the opening track from the album, it has a nice feel; but unfortunately ‘nice’ is just about all it is. Having said that, the melody will instantly get stuck in your head and even the overindulgence of the “oh oh, oh oh-oh” by the end is just within the limits of maintaining sanity.
This single does enough to get stuck in your head, at the same time the band ensure that they don’t really overdo all the basics; in doing that they ensure that you’re just left wanting that little bit more. The B-side is an instrumental version of the track, which is exactly what the title suggests, the song without the vocals. It’s not amazing, but it’s good, it’ll probably never repeat the success of ‘Hey There Delilah’, at least that song was saying something a bit different; this just feels too much like the whole Fall Out Boy vibe which has choked the alternative music scene over the last few years. That said, it ticks the right boxes, is big enough in the right places, it’s just distinctly average in comparison with the last single.
