I love Coldplay. My love affair with them began from first seeing the one shot video for Yellow on some music TV channel. After that I was hooked. I have loved everything they have done and always look forward to seeing the new direction that they are pushing in. Finding out they were relasing a new album got me excited and finding out I could download their new single for free got me even more excited!

When Violet Hill played through for the first time I felt a sense of dissapointment come over me. It seemed at first glance that Coldplay had finally released something really rubbish. And this was the single! And the first single to be more specific so how shit must the album be?

I have now listened to this single about 10 times and I must say that after about the third listen then melody was stuck in my head and I found myself singing along! Initial glances aside "Viloet Hill" is an ace single by Coldplay. Each time I hear it I find new things that I am hearing and that my ears somehow tuned out in the inital listen.

The bass is impecable and the post chorus repetitious chord stabs really hypnotize and kind of remind me of when Tool do a similar thing- obviously in not such a hard way! There is a great guitar solo in this song too, truly unique and catchy. The song has great dynamics and starts and finishes as if Chris Martin is sat in a room on his own with his piano singing directly into your ear.

A good sign that this new Coldplay album is going to be immense, "Violet Hill" has got me all excited now and my warning to you would be not to listen to this song just once because your ears don't take everything in they should on initial listen.
