Mariah Carey – E=MC² The Island Def Jam Group By: Fridae Mattas Mariah Carey is a huge musical influence for many vocalists and singers in general, she has been for me. Once I heard ‘Vision Of Love’ back in 1990, I knew she was going to be huge she could actually sing! Many of the others like Janet and Madonna didn’t really have an amazing set of pipes the only one out there that could sing the larries out of a tune was Whitney Houston. Mariah came along and I was like wow these songs are insane and her voice is amazing, I didn’t know pop singers could sing that high and co-write their own songs!! At eight years old I thought only the Opera broads could hit those notes. Not even Whitney could touch Mariah when it comes to talent just as Celine Dion could not, neither of the two write their own tracks, like the many “Musicians” in mainstream land (Leona Lewis is not the new Mariah not even close, she would cry if I reviewed her album it’s a super napper!) I have loved many of MC’s albums but a few were not amazing actually they were nappers! What was she going to come up with next? MC usually bringing fresh originality to the pop scene. First spin of “Touch My Body’ was not feeling it, l was like what the*&%$ is this it sounds like “We Belong Together” she just went ahead and recycled her own beat as fifty thousand other people have, capitalizing on the success of that track continuing to replicate it’s melody. Both tracks are number two “We Belong Together” is number two on “Emancipation Of Mimi” and “Touch My Body” is number two on this latest Record “E=MC²” The only difference is pieces of the melody, lyrics and a few tweaks in the track. Why continue the formula? It worked the first time but we do not need repeats especially from the same artist! Guilty of redundancy Mimi, many tracks on this album have repetitive beats and melodies. Eventually ‘Touch My Body’ grew on me but still not a huge fan I always skip it unless I'm at a club and want someone to touch, very rare they get the chance to touch. I do love off and am obsessed with “Side Effects” the combo of the sonata in whole, there’s just this vibe you get when you listen to it, relatable for sure. The tune features Young Jeezy who throws it down in the Intro and drops a sixteen near the end. I was surprised Storch was the producer, after Porn Star Paris and Brooke Hogan I would think people would question his ears. Personally I would not pay him a dime; he would have to pay me to drop a hook for one of his tracks let alone a whole track, that’s extra man! Not hating I don’t hate on anyone I just tell it like it is, people may misconstrue words but I am all about telling you what they won’t. Mariah should definitely release this track as her third single, the beat is crazy the melody is fluid the vocals are off the hook the lyrics are deep talking about troublesome times. There was something missing though in the vocal arrangements, the puzzle was not complete. It felt as if it could have been better, still my favorite for now. Props to Storch for the beat although I would never hire him. A few other tracks that are good to dance or work out to are “I’m That Chick”. It has this disco throwback vibe, a line in the first verse is “(Don’t) Take this seriously like Pac All Eyes On Me”. It’s something new but old there is some more originality in this LP after all! “Cruise Control” is the track MC tries to reggae vibe it with “Damian “JR GONG” Marley”, it starts off with the “Shake It Off” melody and then turns into more of a chill, completely different island feel the only thing missing was the steel drums, she does a pretty good job for a first crack at the reggae vibe. Marley brings his Caribbean flavor adding his trademark flow. No MC LP is complete without the classic Carey ballads, new school versions such as “Bye Bye”, “Thanks For Nothing”, “For The Record” I am obsessed with this one as much as “Side Effects” they are tied! The song starts in with some violin dubbed into a nice chill beat, new school with a touch of old MC. There is also some serious Mariah high octave runs placed flawlessly in the background, her voice is still untouchable nothing I would change in the arrangements. There will only be ONE Mariah Carey she kills it produced by B. Cox and Carey. On the track “Migrate” the high octave intro has to go! That ruins the track giving me, the something I never want to hear again shivers! The rest of the tune is alright too much robot vocals for my liking. This is the follow up to the ‘Emancipation of MIMI’ she continues right where she left off, some tunes are too much of a rerun but there is some worthy tracks on this record. Is E=MC² my favorite Mariah album? No way! Daydream was her best album! www.mariahcarey.com ©FRIDAE2008™
