TORONTO FREEDOM FESTIVAL 2008 10th Annual Global Marijuana March “GanjaFest 08'” By Fridae Mattas To all those who don’t know, now you will definitely know! Every year in Toronto we have a special parade as many cities worldwide also have to celebrate Cannabis Week but TDOT does it better! This year was the 10th Annual Global Marijuana March, people gather at Queen’s Park seconds north of the Toronto Legislature to support the legalization of Ganja. Last year they added a celebration of the event in which they called “The Toronto Freedom Festival”. Thousands congregated after a small parade of high folk wandering with passion along Bloor St. east to Yonge St. and south onto Wellesley St. eventually migrating back to Queen's Park to enjoy the festivities. These high missions had a statement to make a purpose for polluted wandering and that is, to spread the word on making Marijuana legal. Another huge reason for the congregation of potheads is to smoke reefer, lots of it freely in public! Other reason are to learn about Cannabis from people enlightening you at the Speaker stage, enjoy the munchie stations, the tree affiliated merchandise and lots of music from Reggae to House at three different stages. There was no alcohol allowed, probably the only reason the city let’s this happen, only one controlled substance to use and the drug of the day is Ganja mon! MJ is okay whether smoked or baked but no juice on premise. There were a few ‘Batzis’ on Bikes’ and about ten swat dressed popo’s with their yellow rain gear on each corner of Queens Park for crowd control just in case the stoner’s caused a riot. *Laughs* Yeah right they are too focused on rolling their seven by ten inch super blunts, contemplating how they will smoke them because the blunt is so thick! *Those blunts were everywhere!* the best part about it is the Popo’s can’t do anything! They can watch wishing it was them but they can’t even give out tickets for those who had more than fifteen grams on them (In Toronto the legal amount you can have without getting booked!). There were thousands of people most were smoking or rolling as the P.O’s rode by taking in all the herbal blends. All the different aromas of the different types of grass all mixed in the air walking in the crowd observing people and I overheard a kid saying “This is so cool look at all the bongs!” I laughed but it was true there were shops set up selling all your basic Ganja needs. They did not sell trees but it wasn’t hard to find any, just ask someone to the left or the dude to the right with the super blunt or that dude over there with the six foot bong. It’s your modern day hippy love fest, and it was raining talk about loyalty to herbal essence all day so crusty, muddy and gross but interesting Ganjastock 08’. I missed the parade but got to the festivities in time to hear some of Marc Emery’s (The Prince of Pot) high jibbers. Emery is an outspoken advocate for the legalization of marijuana. As he kept jibbering about how “Everything is more fun when you’re high.” Many opposed to the legalization of M.J. could have challenged his words, there was no actual validity in his ramblings, it sounded like some high ass super jibbering to me. He kept jumping from one topic to the other more amusing than influential, Marc tell me something I didn’t know. I would have learned something If I made it earlier to catch ‘Nora Wolf” She is a Minister and Psychic who is pro pot all the way! Good times, it would have been so much better if there was sunshine instead of the dreary rain. The performances I caught were of “USS” who are amazing performers the chosen Special Guests! They tore it up in the rain foshizzle so much energy from these dudes. USS “House Of David Gang” an instrumental band with a guest star singer forgot her name. They were jammin' although there was no vocals in the first track it was chill and mellow. House Of David Gang I interviewed an old school reggae artist in the rain I was frozen the one and only “Whitey Don” who once was signed to Jive Records but now kicks it behind the scenes. He was to perform alongside his boy “MC Snow”, some may know him as Snow the artist first white person to have a number one Reggae record, former hits are ‘Informer’, ‘Anything for You’ and currently “Just For You” tearing up Z103’s request line’s! Princess Snow didn’t show because of the rain, he left his boy Whitey hanging, the performance never happened. If you are trying to make a “comeback” show up to your gigs no matter the weather! Although in a way he would have came for nothing because they shut down once monsoonish rain came pouring down making it dangerous to keep the music live! After the downpour the crowd dispersed except for those clearly enjoying the muddy rain. Ganjastock was a great success Bong Man, Box Man blunts and bongs! Next year they better pray for sunny skies, if you are a major tree fan, a member of the Underground Society you need to go to “The Toronto Freedom Festival” that is any potheads dream! Harold and Kumar’s next adventure should be to “Ganjafest” that would be jokes, I’ll write the script!
