We Are Scientists – Brain Trust Mastery

These two New Yorkers are out there with their latest album ‘Brain Thrust Mastery’ and it’s fair to say they have impressed me. I haven’t heard much of their material before this album so it feels like I’m diving in at the deep end.

We Are Scientists have awesome sleek guitar riffs throughout this album which continually impress me as each track starts. Track four - ‘Lethal Enforcer’ includes 80’s sounding guitar riffs giving a different sound to this album. That continues throughout the album and into ‘Spoken For’ The first mellow song and the only one in Brain Thrust Mastery. Keith Murray’s vocals stand out in this track, maybe because it is a mellow song and it’s not surrounded by crazy rhythms but also you can hear the passion he’s putting into it. Hitting in at 1 minute 44 seconds a surprise dirty bass line briefly appears in the track but this doesn’t disturb the mellow feeling both Murray and Cain put into this song.

There is no surprise that ‘Chick Lit’ will be the band’s next single as a awesome guitar riff closely followed by a dance bass line and drum beat hit into the song. This doesn’t stop when the lyrics start either. At 2 minute 40 seconds it sounds like Muse has burst into the album and did a typical Matthew Bellamy experimental guitar solo.

For the last song the use of trumpets definitely made ‘That’s What Count’ a great finisher also it gives the song a jazz feeling. We Are Scientists, trumpets, jazz?!? No one would have guessed.

Like I said at the beginning, this album has impressed me and I had no idea We Are Scientists were this good. I’m not going to give them a perfect 10 because they haven’t suddenly become my favourite band, but I will definitely respect them more as a band. This album is worth listening to at least once, but that’s for you to decide.
