The bands bio says that Notwist used to be a Hardcore punk band before drifting into dark brooding indie and then eventually settling on lo-fi electronica. If that is the transition the band has chosen then I can only imagine what musical option is next. I am all for bands experimenting and changing styles but with not having heard Notwist before I have no comparison to make with these tracks to the older material.

"Where In This World" is the first single from an album that has been 6 years in the making. If this song is anything to go by then I beg the question, what the hell have they been doing for 6 years? With an intro consisting of a rising orchestral crescendo I had high hopes that this track would build into something beautiful. A real orchestra?! Nobody does that anymore this is going to be brilliant. Sadly, those 30 seconds are all you get. It doesn't build into anything. And that is my problem with this single. It just seems to float along on a wave of mediocrity. Not building, not dipping, just aimlessly existing.

The second track on the single, Sleep (Osdam Mix), is again, very similar to the first. Normally a remix of a track is used to create a whole different feel for a song and a band. Unfortunately, i feel that this remix has just not done that. It is very repetitive and just plods along not really taking you anywhere. I am sitting here willing this track to break into an electro drum fill, or a crazy synth solo but no. Nothing happens. I can only hope that the six years spent on the album "The Devil, you and me" have produced some better songs than these two.

With a sound that is a mixture of Massive Attack and Death Cab For Cutie with hints of Her Space Holiday it has the potential to be great but it never quite reaches that level. I wanted to like it. I really did. I wanted to add a new band to my collection that were interesting and different but sadly Notwist will not be that band.
