An unsigned band from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hot Box self released their EP, The Histone Code. The name of the EP probably popped into their brains when the bassist, Amanda Dellevigne and the guitarist and vocalist, Danielle Stolzenberg met in the neuroscience laboratory of Boston College with Histone relating to DNA.

The three piece band, including their new drummer, Eric Kogelschatz have come back since having a break and are ready to come out and shine amongst the other bands. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening anytime soon with Hot Box.

My attention directed to the EP sleeve of The Histone Code, but I don’t know which the front is and which the back is as they haven’t got any name tagging or credits on it anywhere. That can be seen to be a bad thing. Luckily inside as well as the disc, Hot box has provided a track list and credits on a little piece of card. However the photos on it are rather nice; old rag, dirty teddy bears can be seen hanging from outside a house window which has been left to crumble away and possibly the paint work would do that too if you rubbed the wall or window frame. The reason why I like this photo is because it’s unusual for an EP cover and it’s the same with the back or maybe front cover of the EP even though I cannot understand what it may be. Again, paint flaking away is all I can seem to make out but it carries the unusual theme across both sides of the EP sleeve.

Now I can slightly understand why girls should never be in a ‘girl band’ unless they want to get chart hits and collect the cheesy awards from some award show which has never been heard before. The first song ‘Twin Falls’ is painful to listen too, the out of tune vocals from Stolzenberg and the guitar which sounds like it’s not being played properly, probably out of tune as well make me grimace knowing Stolzenberg has no talent at all. Dellevigne cannot be heard on the bass, the mix of painful, dying vocals and riffs are drowning out the bass line. Making it seem Hot Box is only a two piece band, vocalist/guitarist and a drummer. I soon found out that the rest of the EP is just like the first song. What’s good about this EP? The drums are ok, not the best drumming I’ve heard but it could be a lot worse than the drowning cat on guitar.

It’s difficult trying to find the right words without sounding like an arrogant and completely horrible person. I’m just typing down what I think of this band, it just so happens to be a bit on the rubbish side. It would have been nice if Hot Box was actually good and Stolzenberg and Dellevigne proved to everyone that girls can sing and play instruments in an ‘Indie/Rock’ band. But that’s left for another ‘girl band’ to prove.
