Dgenetics Music
Dgenetics Music, the label of LA-based producer Dgenetics may not be the most familiar name in music to you or I right now, but let’s face it: they make a damn good compilation. If your idea of a compilation is Clubber's Guide... or NOW! then please, please, please, for all that is holy. Piss off!
Taking a chance on a genre defining, forward thinking roster of bands, Dgenetics has brought us a brilliant taster of everything the label is about. Not just in sound, but in moral, diversity and just about every other buzz word you’d associate with good music. The roster is relatively unfounded at the moment, (Dgenetics is in its second year of operation) but what the four acts display over the course of eight tracks and just over half hour almost makes you want to rush out and buy everything else they’ve ever recorded.
In good style, Dgenetics kicks off with the founder’s very own hip-hop project, Dgenerate Nation, ‘Skate With Me’ is an upbeat slice of hip hop. With driving rhythms, it reminds me of a few Basement Jaxx songs I’ve heard (my experience with this genre is limited might I add). It’s not all hip-hop though, the label’s forte is electronic. Old Gold offers a similar feel to Dgenerate Nation. However, Flore falls under a more funk-driven category of electronica. DJ Pumpkin Patch brings out a more 80’s vibe. The combination of the first tracks by the four acts is an amazingly diverse mix. Making Dgenetics Music a must-see!
So what of the second round of tracks. Dgenerate Nation explores a more down tempo feel, with female vocals and much more instrumentation, including brass sections and a choir like vocal section. Haunting. The stand out track probably comes right at the end, ‘Rushin’ by DJ Pumpkin Patch reminds you of all the best bits of the 80’s, disco, jazz and just about everything else in between, probably most things that will come after as well in honesty.
This compilation is definitely worth checking out. Diversity is the key word, this label are taking electronica onto another level and looking to the future, if these four artists are anything to go by then the future’s going to be great. So, what are you waiting for?
