Facedown Records
The first point I will make about this band is that they are a Christian band and to quote them, the band “has nothing to do with music and everything to do with our faith in Christ." So for a band who’s prerogative is not the music, they sure don’t do a bad job at creating a musically and technically interesting album. I’m not quite sure how the axe/chainsaw wielding pose on the back on the album cover fits into the Christian view of things, but it does fit in to the aggressive edge that this album has.
Taking the intricacy and technicality of a band like Between the Buried and Me and structuring the songs in a more accessible fashion and you’ve got For Today. They have created a metal album that is very approachable, with lots of different layers that make it a great album to listen to. There are tech metal riffs, beat downs, sing along chorus’s and gang chants. The lead riffs seem to spiral, swirl and sweep around the songs in beautifully simple and yet deeply intricate fashion.
As someone once said, a band is like a bed, the frame is the drums, the mattress is the bass and the guitars and vocals are all the covers and trimmings. So if For Today was a bed it would be a queen size beast with a great comfy mattress and garnished with lashings of gold and sparkly trim.
So for a young band making their debut full length release, For Today have done a pretty sterling job, clearly showing their technical ability and passion to do get something great music out there, whether they mean to or not. It would really be interesting to hear what they could do if they really were focusing all their inputs towards the musical content. Lets just hope that all their preaching doesn’t over shadow the great music that these guys are capable of making.
