Underoath - Survive Kaleidoscope [DVD] Most people will probably wonder why I am reviewing something that has, on initial impression, already been reviewed on Altsounds.com. The major difference is this is the DVD that accompanies the CD release and it is so damn good I though it warranted it's own review. Underoath have been one of my favourite bands for quite a while now. Many people like to bring up the fact they are a christian band and either praise or diss this fact. I personally don't give a fuck. I love these guys. This DVD just re-iterates to me how good they are. I have seen them live now a couple of times and unfortunately for me the sound both times was complete rubbish and it left me wondering if these guys were good live or not. This DVD lays claim to their brilliance as a live band. The guitars are impecable, the screaming is amazing, the drummer never misses one single beat and is probably the most solid part of this band. The pretty vocals are prettier than Lana Lane from Smalleville and the harmonies are perfect-ish. Going from a band that used to be renowned for their bad vocals live these guys have come a long way! As each song ends and the next begins it helps remind you how many classic tracks these guys actually have. It's at this moment that I realize there is a new album coming. OH FUCK! It is going to be so good. Hopefully as good if not better than their last effort which gained them a large respect as a serious yet heavy band. With this album I expect something better and heavier and if not I am going to be sorely dissappointed! I'm really glad I got to review this DVD. Gav said to me "I don't get the purpose of a live DVD". I would have to say that in 99% of the cases i would fully agree and to be honest I only expected to watch this once. Whilst writing this it is my third time through this and I am sure it is not going to be my last. The first time i was at the studio on my dual screen setup. The idea was to work on the left and have this in the background on the right. That did not happen! I ended up just staring at the right hand screen and totally negated the left hand work based screen. I couldn't keep my eyes and ears from what I was seeing and hearing. 2nd viewing I actually fell asleep for a little bit. Now I don't just fall asleep for anything. It has to lull me like a lullaby and really physically please me in whatever way to make me nod off. The music these guys produce does this to me quite obviously regardless of it's heavy factor. After awaking to my girl coming home I found myself rejuvinated and watched the remaining tracks in awe and with complete attention. The final time I put it on to watch and write and again I am blown away. This CD/DVD combo is a complete tease for all the fans out there itching for a new and fresh Underoath taste. But I love their teasing and I will continue to love it until I hear their new shit - kind of like an annoying step sister. I fucking love this band. Always have. Always will. You should too. For real! |
