Echo
This is the new single from Morcheeba. If you don’t know the name, you should. Morcheeba have sold a few million records in their time and have established themselves as a very credible outfit. This single is from the new album Dive Deep that came out earlier this year to very good response.
The first track Gained the World is what you’d expect from Morcheeba, a light floaty track, with simple music and sweet soft vocals. The track has a simple backline with guitar, bass, drums and some light strings, nothing too heavy. The vocals seem to be effortless and never seem to surpass any great level of volume (not in the actual track volume, as in the way its sung), just simple and easy. The words are catchy and after a few listens you find yourself singing along. Also the lead chorus line is very interesting and will have you delving in to the back of your mind to conjure up a deeper meaning to them. But who knows, they may mean nothing at all, that’s the joy of interpretation.
The b-side is a funky little number called Priceless. It’s what I’d imagine Jamiroquai would sound like if crossed with The Roots. It’s got a chunky bass line, a nice solid drum beat underneath, some scratching, a Hendix style guitar and some very soulful singing. It makes an interesting contrast to the a-side of this single. This is then followed by a remix of the a-side, which isn’t very different from the original mix, simply replace the guitar for a warm sounding organ and swap the live drum sound for a more compressed one with a bit more kick. In essence it’s the same song and I can imagine them in postproduction sitting down and having to pick the one that they wanted to be the album track. I think they made the better choice but there’s not much in it really.
From the standard of these tracks and the bands general standard I’d suggest that you just go out and buy the album and not waste your money on this single. There is bound to be more tasty cuts like these on there.
