I don't even know where to begin with this review. With so many great aspects in this film its hard to tell you about it without giving to much away. Take the best effects from The Matrix and 300, the violence and attitude of Fight Club, the comic book style of Sin City, the musical talents of Danny Elfman and throw it all into the mix and you will get Wanted. The film is based on the graphic novels of the same name by writer Mark Millar and directed by Timur Bekmambetov, the mastermind behind Nightwatch. Of which the style of Wanted leans very heavily towards. Its dark and moody with a soul underneath. And the only way to get to that soul you have to shoot the outer layers off at high velocity.
The story is centered around the life of Wesley Gibson played by Scottish actor James McAvoy (who pulls of the American accent with ease). His father left him when he was a week old, he has a shitty job that he hates and a boss to match and not the best life at home with his girlfriend. This life keeps plodding along, day in, day out. That is until Fox (Angelina Jolie) comes crashing into his life. She explains that Wesley is part of an elite group of assassins with outstanding talents in the forms of killing and proceeds to train him up with the help of Morgan Freeman.
I don't really want to say more in case I slip up and give to much away. You need to see Wanted for yourself. I already want to see it again. Its so over the top in so many aspects that you cant help but enjoy it. Its complete disregard for physics and the real world truths is outstanding. Curving bullets round corners, flipping cars in the air and landing them perfectly to drive off again and riding effortlessly on the tops of trains all make this film unmissable. There is alot more than that though. Its more than just balls to the wall action. It does have a story of revenge and scores to be settled. It just so happens that all these scores need settling with bullets and slow motion fighting. With more gun fights than you will ever need from a film, Wanted grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you until you cant take anymore, then it lets you rest, and starts all over again.
I want to see this film again, just because I've only just got over the shock of the first viewing so now I think I will be able to watch it from start to end without having to stop to catch my breath halfway through. I know as the summer months are slowly passing by the blockbuster movies will be coming thick and fast. Wanted, with no doubt in my mind, needs to be one of those films you have to see. You will not forgive yourself if you miss it. Don't wait for it to come out on DVD. This is the kind of film that thrives on the big screen.
