From their humble beginnings in Brighton The Ghost Of A Thousand (shortened to TGOAT) have worked hard to combine the hardcore mixed with punk spirit that their label in Epitaph have started since the mid eighties.

Their first album managed to gain The Ghost Of A Thousand a cult following... Hmm, I don't really get all the hype surrounding The Veronicas. I remember they were on Neighbours once and I was completely unimpressed. Two girls that were vaguely attractive who looked alike singing breathy Britney style songs – am I mistaken?

Ok, so they are twins, so that's why they look... There isn’t that much to do in Telford, which is why these lads probably decided to form a band.

I’m not sure if the lyrics about zombies and devouring flesh is derived from the bands actual personal experience or from a minor interest in the subject. For arguments sake I would say that the band...
To The Nines is the 6th full-length release from Danish melodic death metal group, Hatesphere and what an album. This is what I love to hear. A band that can be brutal but without having to do it consistently for the whole length of an album. There are so many albums out there where the emphasis... So have you heard The Joy Formidable? Yes? Well done you have been proved worthy, you will be anointed with a sword made from glow-in-the-dark jelly babies and given a cape to wear made from the skins of indie kids complete with skinny jeans. No? No! You will be made to suffer in the simplest of... At twenty seven I am clearly far too old for the target market of Minneapolis boy band quintet Sing it Loud, but that doesn't mean I should dismiss their debut album 'Come Around' with a patronizing shrug of the shoulder. Yes, there are many flaws. Front man Pat Browns' voice for example is a tad...
One hundred arduous steps to the top floor of the Union building. No elevator. No roadies. You pack every pound of your equipment up, and at the top is a convention room. Built in 1974, with absolutely no sense of aesthetics, it's capable of containing 200 people, but rarely sees more than 50 on... Lissie Trullie's 'Boy Boy' is a quirky, immediate slice of American indie-pop which manages to tick all the right boxes but does so in a fashion so perfunctory it should almost be a crime. Everything from the softy cooed backing vocals to the jerky guitar patterns comes across as a calculated... Its been six whole years since Rancid last brought us a studio album (2003’s “Indestructible”) and haven‘t things changed since then. A new USA president, a worldwide recession, HD TV, Facebook taking over the world……the list could go on and on. Its refreshing then to see that even though the...
I can't seem to make up my mind on Hockey. Although I actually quite liked “Too Fake” initially, I couldn't escape the underlying feeling that they looked lots of boys who I already know, who I can't stand. I hate the denim jacket, Oasis haircut look and the dancing in the video from front man...

I think enough has been written about Pains of Being Pure at Heart on this site alone, all of it positive, so I’ll keep this one short. If you still haven’t heard this band (shame on you), then ‘Young Adult Friction’ is as good a place to start as any. ‘Young Adult Friction’ is one of many... Buffalo 77’s new album starts out with “Won’t Forget”, an echoey melodic track which sets the scene for the rest of the album. When listening to this track I am vaguely reminded of The Manics from the 1990’s, but not the best bits of The 90's Manics however.

  The album never really progresses...

Taken from their second LP ‘Dreams’, the latest release from LA based ‘metalcore’ band In This Moment is the vicious and powerfully delivered ’‘Forever’.

Stereotypically metalcore in every single possible way, with restrained verses, galloping pre-choruses, melodically anthemic hooks, badass rock... Some gigs have a lot to live up to; gigs that seem to take an age to come around, as you excitedly imagine how good the night ahead will be. When the reality lives up to the dream, they’re gigs that stay with you forever. When the night ends in disappointment, it can even affect the way you hear... There’s a lot of shit being shat on internet forums and blogs regarding the current crop of lower-than-Guided By Voices-fi/no-wave bands garnering much attention right now; bands such as Times New Viking, No Age, Vivian Girls and Blank Dogs are certainly dividing opinions in the ‘indie’ world right...

I think I'm officially in love with Florence Welch's voice. It has all of Dolores O'Riordan's (from the Cranberries) springy cathartic yelps and is anchored by a rooted, penetrating intensity reminiscent of Heartless Bastards' Erika Wennerstrom. In 2008, Flourence and the Machine enthralled music... There are some bands that make you want to get up and dance. There are others that put you to sleep. It’s not often that you find an album that does both — and I mean this as a compliment.

The self-titled EP by North Shore’s Mali Mali is a half-hour blissful journey. It starts out with the...

Remember when you were little? All that joy you found in just running around like an idiot? All hyper and bouncy and excitable? Well the Answering Machine do. Seriously, Ritalin was invented for these four Manc based indie popsters.

Coming on like The Wombats trying to out Maccabee the Maccabees...
Sonic Boom Six bring together an inspiring mix of styles that simply wouldn’t work on paper. "City of Thieves" contains elements of Grime, Ska, Punk, Metal, Dub and Reggae with perfect balance - and to top it off the lyrics are a damning commentary on British culture. Sonic Boom Six have created an...

Hailing from deepest darkest Devon (well Exeter to be exact) The Cut Ups offer their new album “The High and Mighty”. The album opens with the title track which is an upbeat number that channels artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen and Flogging Molly. The vocals on the opener are a joy to... There are hundreds of current bands I could compare Go Faster to as their brand of chirpy indie rock has been very much in vogue for at least the last 5 years. The guitars clang like The Wombats, the deadpan lyrics rail against modern Britain like an early Blur and everything is complimented by a...
The very second I started spinning this disc I knew I what I was in for, a band who seem to have been primarily and unapologetic-ally influenced by The Replacements, a band I deem to be one of the best and most underrated of the last 30 years having written 3 of the albums which reside in my all... What we have here is another thoroughly satisfying release from those friendly folks at Big Scary Monsters, Shapes madcap debut 'The Pasture, The Oil' comes across like an even more pissed off Future Of The Left jamming with Gallows and the results are initially striking.

Opening gambit 'Trampled...

I understand what Jarvis is trying to do here, he's attempting to prove he can “rock out”. Despite collaborating with Steve Albini as producer, I found this entire album entirely yawnsome. The thing that bothered me the most was Jarvis Cockers' voice, it's so bad it's almost unbearable. Admittedly...
“The People Or The Gun” is a welcome return for Anti-Flag, they have been relatively quiet since the 2008 release of “The Bright Lights of America”. As expected, track one of Anti-Flag’s new album, interestingly titled “Sodom, Gomorrah, Washington D.C. (sheep in shepherds clothing)” leaps into... Grunge is a sub-genre of rock music which has lived on the fringes for a large portion of it's existence, gaining prominence briefly in the early 90's when Nirvana and Pearl Jam broke industry barriers to become multi-platinum standard bearers. We The Faceless's self titled EP comes across as a... Personally I’ve never been a Keane fan (no pun intended). I’d grouped them together with the likes of Elbow and The Doves and I couldn’t imagine them producing anything better than middle of the road, watered down stadium rock. However just before they bored the majority of their listeners to...
Fancy boys the Fancy Toys proudly presents: ‘Gypsy Eyes’, a limited edition EP with the heritage of their worldwide journeys.

Mickaël Téo and James Duncan traveled and toured all over the world and as a result brought several musical souvenirs with them; though the EP relies heavily on acoustic... Hype, within the rather broad genre that is ‘indie’, seems to be more fervent and builds at a more rapid rate in the UK than it does in the US. Indeed American music websites often poke fun, understandably so, at the way NME regulate the musical taste of our nation’s youth. And it’s not just... The latest release from Leeds’ very own producer sensation T2 (the man who gave the world the impressively successful ‘Heartbroken’ a little while back) benefits from the same likeable traits and features that ensured that his previous releases kept clubs moving.

“The Doppler Effect” has a flawless intro, showing off a mix of musical ideas which have been successfully interwoven; proving Rifle Fire Rifle can clearly play their instruments well and create songs with beautiful precision - so what could go wrong? Unfortunately, the vocals. Phil Keogh sounds... I had heard so many good things about this album before I had got round to listening to it myself for review, however my main hesitation was that it was music you had to get into. In some respects it was, and in others it was completely the other way round, it got into me. It literally floated... On discovering TV On The Radio on the late great MTV2’s 120 mins, I immediately fell for their unique sound. No matter what they release you just have to like it, even if it’s the most diverse non-mainstream collective of sounds, it will still get a play on Radio 1.

“Crying” provides yet another...
Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day is, as holidays go, particularly over-hyped, overrated and most importantly over-commercialized and over-marketed. I could go on, but this isn’t a review of February 14th, and anyway my point here is that despite the day being rather naff, it has now given the world...

Ok I might as well get this out of the way first and foremost. Sweden based Grace Will Fall's admittedly punishing second album (tentatively titled 'Second Album') bored me to tears, so much so that I found it hard to sit through once let alone twice. It wasn't for the extremities of the record...
For those that can remember the stunning first single ‘Elusive’ released by Wolverhampton’s top acoustic/folk singer/song writer will already know just how talented he is. The haunting vocals and gentle guitar playing left you either crying in your hands or smiling like a kid at a sweet shop. As... After four mainstream albums is Peaches showing us a vulnerable side? Although, the vocals on “I feel Cream” range from being aggressive to timid, the driving beats behind all the songs give the impression that Peaches will turn around and smack you in the face for merely suggesting vulnerability....

Bit of an unusual review this, but because a lot of the tracks on this CD are credited to different producers (though all originally by Deadmau5), I will be taking you through the record track by track because they vary greatly and should be considered independently rather than compared to one...
I was smuggling two bottles of over the counter weight loss medication out of a.... never mind where it was. I had this guy who sold them for three dollars less than retail, and cut me four dollars on each bottle. An electronic beep forced me to a stop on the way out. Turning around, I smiled to... It is a real pity that this mini album was recorded after Castrovalva had officially signed Leemun Smith as their lead singer. Castrovavla have included eight songs on this “mini” album, but only one features the aforementioned Leemun Smith.
Castrovalva have set themselves up as a Progressive Rock... The ability to capture one person’s emotions is quite a hard achievement. A whole crowd of people is damn near impossible. Scott Matthews manages to break that boundary. His onstage presence is something that only a few lucky musicians have and uses it to his full advantage.

It was quite a shock...
And so we add to the never ending list of post-hardcore American bands trying to make an imprint into the music world. Epitaph seem to be reeling out these bands willy nilly and not one has come close to the likes of Alexisonfire who are actually quite good. Saying that Vanna have managed to steer... When choosing a band name, most people choose something of a personal approach, or something with a hidden meaning. I think the four piece from Cape Town missed the point. As Dorp doesn't seem to mean anything, can you prove me wrong lads? It kind of sounds like something Robin Williams would say...

Covered Call (for the fact fans out there - "a financial investors term referring to having a long position in an asset combined with a short position in a call option on the same underlying asset") represent everything I thoroughly dislike about rock music.
