What's your favourite soul song? Now narrow it down to British origin. If you have more than one, then you're doing well. Narrow it further to one released within the past 10 years. If you still have more than one, hats off to you. The big question is, are you the only one who still remembers it?... The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. Immediately I’m more intrigued than I have been by a band name in some time…haha, take that Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head.
And, after giving their latest album The Whole Fam Damnily a listen, I feel relaxed, refreshed, and am beginning to make noises like... The pleasantly titled ‘Kids On Fire’ is the latest release from New York’s BM Linx – an act that seems confused about their own sound but that also benefit greatly from this minor identity crisis. With an electro-indie-rock swaggering sound that lies somewhere in the very vast space between...
The most rock and roll introduction to a song yet to blast out of 2009? Quite likely.

Make sure that your air guitar fingers are warmed up as necessary before listening to ‘Live Or Lie’ by Portsmouth’s The Devil’s Conspiracy. Unfortunately however, the rest of the track doesn’t really live up to...

If you dislike The Black Lips because you believe they are unoriginal goons too fixated with pre-1970’s sounds, then stop reading now. This band haven’t changed one iota. 200 Million Thousand isn’t The Black Lips' nu-rave album, this isn’t The Black Lips' crunk album and despite what you might... Lounge and chill out tunes for the masses. This is sunbathing music at its finest, something you would hear on a "Chilled Ibiza" or "Chill Anthems" compilation album. Refreshing, inspiring and bloody cool. Zero 7, Moorcheba, Portishead, Boards Of Canada fans will be wetting themselves over A.M....
For those that don’t know, there is a gene commonly found in mice called ‘Sunday Driver’. There is also a band commonly found in London called ‘Sunday Driver’. The connection between the two is a vague one, in which the band thought that an obscure mouse gene best suited for their music.

Sunday... Manchester has always been a city that has thrived on new music and at present this is not different. There is currently an abundance of new music which the is turning the city into almost a creative music factory as the city gives birth to many talented young artists and bands of different genres,...

Hearing Seether are named after the Veruca Salt song I was hoping for a slice of joyously buoyant indie-pop-perfection. Or, if not , maybe some doom-laden gothic music laced with swirling melodies and self-loathing.

Seether offer neither.

Instead it is a return to formulaic mid-90s post-grunge....

Fat Cat appear to be picking up more standard indie-rock fare recently (Frightened Rabbit, Brakes) amongst an eclectic roster but their relationship with The Rank Deluxe goes back to 2005. And, The Rank Deluxe (“the best of the worst”) come with a troubled history. Their history involves... This was my most anticipated gig of the year. I brought tickets the moment they went on sale and there was no way I was missing this gig, no matter how drastic the alternative situation may have been.

Shockingly, I arrived super early, feeling right at home amongst the other band t-shirt clad,...

Godsticks are a UK based trio, who started out in 2006 playing as a cover band and have recently set out to create their own music. It consists of Darran Charles, Jason Marsh and Steve Roberts, who were drawn together through a love of rock, funk and pop. What they have created in their debut,...

The millstone of 'hot new band' can a difficult one for any young group to bear or escape. But on the second single from “Fine Fascination”, Red Light Company don’t sound intimidated. Following echoing solitary piano chords, “Arts and Craft” explodes into full-on epic indie-rock. It is so wide... Rising out of the ashes of bands such as Black Flag in the early 90’s Earth Crisis entered the hardcore scene with lyrics fighting against the corruption caused by governments, drug addiction and crime making them popular towards the straight edge lifestyle of no drink, drugs or promiscuity with... Did It Again is the single release from Baby Gravy’s upcoming debut album. Baby Gravy consists of Iona Roisin (lead vocals), Dale White (keyboard and bass), Zahra Tehrani (drums and vocals) and David Tehrani (bass).

Polar Bear Clubs debut E.P ‘The Redder, The Better’ was a breath of fresh air in an over-crowded punk scene full of teenage wannabes. Polar Bear Club are widely respected in the scene for their gruff vocals, excellent song-writing abilities and ability to change tempo perfectly. However,... Lilies On Mars based in South East London have delivered an album that insists captivating mystery. Their debut has an infinite depth sourced from an out-of-worldly and poignant sound.

Bad reviews aren't the nicest thing to read, and, unless something is actually that bad, I tend to refrain from such strong remarks. I am afraid though that this track missed the good bin. Out on 30th March, Apparation is an unfortunately apt title, as you may well wish it to disappear after...

Hang-over music has always played a huge part in all of our lives. Waking up with a mouth dryer than Ghandi's flip flopp, scanning the room for the nearest beverage available. Whilst thinking "Anything is better than standing up right now". Laura Marling quenches the thirst, with a soothing... I must be going crazy. One day, I swear, there's a picture of two Fed Pennies standing next to Josh Homme (of Queens Of The Stone Age - QOTSA, for those of you who know absolutely nothing) on their MySpace, the next... nothing. Je Suis Animal’s debut album ‘Self Taught Magic From a Book’ released at the end of 2008 garnered much praise in twee-pop circles. Their second single from the album, released next month but dating back to 2005, should help get them a bit more attention beyond the indie-pop cognoscenti.

Their name might not have imparted the same sort of imagery or feeling I was expecting, but this is certainly a good effort from The Fevers with their latest single 'Alright'. Taking away my bias to my non-affinity with indie rock from the 00s, this track is rather good. Their MySpace proclaims...

Before listening to Ida Maria’s debut album, the only thing I knew of her was the song ‘I like You So Much Better When You’re Naked’ which, incidentally, when I first heard it on Radio 1 in the summer of 2008, I hated. However, it turned out that Ida’s raspy, husky delivery of the lyrics made more... The first thing that strikes you about Whisper House is the well-crafted artwork. Ghostly caricatures on dappled backgrounds and a spooky logbook/storybook sort of insert set the scene for a slightly odd, melancholy tale of the sea. It certainly starts out that way, with It's Better To Be Dead...

Beach gospel. Despite seemingly being one of the weirdest combination's of musical styles ever, it kind of makes sense. It does conjure up some weird images, though. Marco Benevento is by no means a newcomer to the music scene, he is perhaps better known for his collaborations with Joe Russo. Heard of Attic Lights? Me neither.

I can only assume that is the sole reason the Glasgow based band have decided to record their own version of this song. To get noticed, and maybe the royalties involved with getting your song as a theme tune of a show - that's right the new and up to date... Coinciding with the release of Marianne Faithfull's Easy Come, Easy Go, a collection of 18 songs written by other people and interpreted in Faithfull's unique way. 'Hold On Hold On' is a pacier version of a song often associated with 'The New Pornographer's' Neko Case.

Simple bass drum patterns, synthesizers and build ups that make you nod your head like Churchill (the dog). Gui Buratto has all of this...
And so here we have it the musical of the film of the book Empire Of The Sun by JG Ballard with Christian "You're a fucking amateur" Bale replaced by men dressed as a cross between Adam Ant's love child, a Thundercat, and Beauty & The Beast (the dude from the shit TV show specifically) any hint of... Hailing from my current place of residence, Nottingham, comes the artist British soul has been waiting for. While his voice may not have the husky power of Seal or the soulful vibrato of Omar, he makes up for this with an original sound with clear inspiration from the likes of Al Green and Teddy... Storsveit Nix Noltes are an 11-piece supergroup of Icelandic musicians so flagrantly talented and prolific that many of them may well already be scattered amongst your CD shelves – they’ve played within múm, Sigur Ros, Benni Hemm Hemm, Animal Collective and Mice Parade to name but a few.

If neatly categorising music is your thing, well....good luck with this! Brazilian João Gustavo refers to his sound as "trash folk" and while there is certainly some truth in this term, any attempt, even by the artist himself, to ascribe this song a genre does it a disservice.

João's lo-fi,... To produce a loveable radio friendly indie tune these days there is a formula that can be used that is guaranteed to work. Catchy sing-along chorus, non offensive obscenity free lyrics and a basic uninspired thump-clap drum beat.

I don’t know if it’s just my home city of Manchester, but for all the numerous positives to be taken from seeing a band in an intimate venue, there is one rather major drawback – the sound. I can’t quite remember how I stumbled across Pure Reason Revolution for the first time back in 2005, but I do remember how dumbfounded I felt. Mica Levi’s first release Filthy Friends was a collective effort with help from musicians such as MC Ghostpoet and jazz band Troyka, and established her in the London garage and grime scene. With big names behind filthy friends and signing up to electro pop label Accidental Records, it was a solid... It has been argued that the punk rock scene within the UK has become somewhat stale in recent years, with an influx of new bands proving to be nothing better than average. Step up Newport quintet Save Your Breath who attempt to provide that missing spark with their latest EP; ‘Nothing worth... This album sounds like they’ve taken an upbeat album and just slowed most of it down. The tempo goes from slow and boring to dull and boring and back again. It sounds as though Howling Bells forced Goldfrapp to do an indie rock album.

Having first discovered Imperial Leisure at a private party that they were playing a few years ago. Immediately I went home to see what I could find out about them. The answer wasn't very much, but they have gone from strength to strength from there and are finally getting the recognition they... In case you haven’t heard yet, musical genius and saviour of the sonic-world (okay, my personal, bias opinion there...) Jack White of the stripey-fame has yet another new band. The Raconteurs? No, they’re old news – Jack has once again teamed up with Little Jack from said band and Dean Fertita... Gaining her prominence at the tender age of 17 with 1964 hit As Tears Go By, Marianne Faithfull’s legacy is one of jaded romance, drug problems and her a constant struggle with the acceptance of fame.
