I find you can usually tell if you’re going to enjoy a gig by how you react, on first impressions, to the venue alone. And here at the O2 Academy in Islington, the smell of stale beer, the misty haze of BO and the abundance of band t-shirts, all spell an undisturbed evening of pure rock, which is...

Shinedown - Live @ the O2 Academy

Electro-acoustic composition is a very hard genre to get into. The songs are filled with an abundance of complex layers and rhythms that make your brain hurt. Take Autechre and Aphex twin as an example. Songs such as 'Window Licker' and 'Acroyear2' have a silly amount of complexity and rhythm, yet... Before I watched the Tropic Thunder movie I was deeply enthusiastic and excited about it. It seemed very good in the trailers and commercials I had seen and felt to me like it was sure to be a hit. In my eyes, anything with Jack Black in it was an instant 'pass' in my books. All his previous...

I think I can safely assume that one of the creepiest things in the world would be Marilyn Manson reading you a bedtime story. Yet here, on Nightmare...

If you wanna write a great song, then bring in the bass long before you bring in the guitars. It worked for Pixies, who wrote most of the best songs ever written, and then Nirvana had a go and wrote most of the best since. If you have no idea what I am talking about, London trio White Lies... Sorry Lord Axl of Guns N' Roses-Shire but you've been outdone and in a much more classy and stylish manner as 'We Have Everything We Need' has been 17 years in the making for Shelleyan Orphan (Messrs Caroline Crawley and Jem Tayle). Well this is almost true, in that they haven't recorded together...
Do you remember that bit at the end of Back To The Future III when Doc Brown is on the train and it can't be stopped, Marty's on the hover-board etc. It's 1885. You all remember it well? OK, my point is, if you can remember that scene at the end then 'Outlaws' is the track I can picture sound...

Like a Punk Rock Vines!

Anyone who remembers the moment when Craig Nicholls of The Vines rolled around stage on Later with Jools Holland, making a series of monkeylike noises whilst continually entangling himself in cables and leaving anything remotely musical to his fellow band members will enjoy... Crowds, Rowdyness and an intense feeling of excitement and that’s only in the queue, it must be a Prodigy gig!

It may have been just over a month a ago but I’m writing this as The Prodigy have recently completed a tour of intimate venues across the country, titled the ‘Invaders Must Die’ tour,...
Hailing from Liverpool, this electro five piece are made up of Jen (vocals), George (bass), Luciano (synth), Andy (guitar), Will (drums) and they're about to set the UK alight with a magnificent neon glow! Enter Soft Toy Emergency...

Soft Toy Emergency have created an absolutely cracking debut... Ahh yes, the soothingly caramel-like tones of Dylan Connor, creating a panoramic view with story-like lyrics and a gentle voice. The nonchalant guitar strumming sways too and fro, like a breeze moving a fir tree. This wee acoustic, power popping Bob Dylan -loving Ben Folds- alike has created the... There’s one thought that passed through my mind after listening to Abraham Levitan’s first solo effort, “Speak, Memory,” the man is going for a seemingly entirely new sound. Personally, I’ve never heard any artist like Levitan. His sound is original, unique, distinctive, rare, or any other synonym...
I never seem to be able to get the hang of the various sub-genres of electronic music. There seems to be one for every conceivable eventuality. House, hard house, grime, minimal, electro, happy hardcore, drum and bass, fidget (yes, fidget), breakbeat, big beat, techno and pretty much every...

Hollywood Undead are another success story of the 21st century MySpace phenomena. After topping the unsigned artist listening charts in 2006, it was evident that it would only be a matter of time before a record label snapped up this six piece rap/rock outfit from sunny California.

AM/Octane... It’s been a few years since The Spectaculars dropped their thirteen track debut LP ‘Have You Heard things’. I felt the need to jibber about these tunes considering the band’s latest has yet to pop out! “You Can Look Up Now” is set to be released soon but was due to drop late last year. The band is...
Crunchy, fuzzy, dirty, smashy. Excellent. Occasional harmonised clean vocals, but don’t fret, the guttural screeching and throat-busting screams will by default return for the next verse. Fantastic. To compensate for the complete lack of tempo interest or implemented musical development, most of...

“Thou shalt not read NME” are wise words from the bearded lyrical genius known as Scroobius Pip. It’s a shame noone will take it literally. Those of you who haven’t come across Pip’s material before should get to it right away. His lyrical content in songs is something every rapper can... This was the long-awaited sequel to 'All the Right Reasons' and it was even more highly anticipated when Grammy-award winning producer Robert Lange (AC/DC, Bryan Adams, Shania Twain, Def Leppard) climbed onboard to work his magic. And in my opinion, it worked. It may not be Back to Black, but it's...

I was expecting the same old, same old when it came to Anarbor - another pop rock band that was overly-ambitious and had that we-can-take-over-the-world-even-though-we're-not-that-good vibe - and in my opinion, that's pretty much what I got. The singer, Slade Echeverria, sounds very much like...

The 5 good looking lads from Young Guns come squealing onto the scene with their debut single 'In The Night', which is to be released via iTunes on February 2.

‘In The Night’ is everything any teenage light rock, punk, wannabe indie fan could ever want in a single. Young Guns have all the basics... Hailing from Liverpool, the city that has flattered to deceive ever since The Beatles cashed in the entire city’s musical talent forever - NAUGHTY Fab Four! - Screaming Lights are a bit like a scouse version of The Music, and not just for their curls.

Having recently reviewed an album from Diminished Fifth Records a few months ago, I knew roughly what to expect from Creator of Scars. Yes that’s right more dirty southern, bluesy metal and rock n’ roll. The first thing I noticed about Creator of Scars was the album cover. On the rear cover Iron...

Grave Digger, if you weren’t aware, are a long-standing German Power Metal outfit. Having many line up changes over the years, Grave Digger’s only surviving original member is vocalist Chris Boltendahl, but considering they have been around for over 25 years it’s no surprise that there may have... They are arguably one of the most gifted bands of the moment. They are a band that will manipulate your emotions, but if their songs make you want to cry, tears, I guarantee, will not be wasted.

Philly sextet The Capitol Years are five albums old, yet this is their first single to be released this side of the pond. Should we be bothered? Based on “Revolutions” (and indeed B-side “CIA”), yes we probably should. It seems we may have been missing out.

With a guitar line that sounds like... Bristol duo Malakai are a mysterious pair consisting of Gee and Scott (yes, that’s as much as we get); Gee being the vocalist, and Scott the general ‘effects’ man. They wear masks on stage, and avoid giving genuine answers to interview questions by amusing themselves with their own in-jokes. Ooh...

It’s hard not to like Kylie. She is, in my opinion, the true epitome of pop. Her ‘reinvention’ was unexpected by the majority of the music industry, and of course, a lot of the hype was as much to do with those gold hotpants as it was her music, but over the years it has become apparent that her...

‘Some folks say that Ava is set to be the reggae Joss Stone’, says John Masouri of Echoes magazine in November 2007. With all due respect to Mr Masouri, statements like that drive me nuts. The music industry seems to have this desire to get everyone in their box, to label and coerce them. Ava...

Pop punk heroes New Found Glory are back with their brand new single 'Listen To Your Friends', it’s catchy, it’s upbeat, but if you’re looking to find something new and exciting about NFG you’ll probably be disappointed. Bringing us their unique mix of high school pop punk and undoubtedly whiny...
Taking one look at the front cover I thought to myself 'I'm going to like this album'. It turns out, you can't always judge a book by it's cover as I found out upon first listen to Hearts. Hoping for something sunny and happy sounding I was instead confronted by a wave of synth and compressed...

The boys from Panic At The Disco (formerly known as Panic! At The Disco) were launched into the music world’s psyche with their screwball single I Write Sins, Not Tragedies a few years back. They introduced themselves with top hats, tails, a video with a wedding gone awry and an epic chorus line,... The Hundred In The Hands have risen from the ashes of The Boggs and feature former Boggs' Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell. Though 'Dressed In Dresden' was recorded before The Boggs disbanded, it's clear what the intent was as they have produced very much a pop tune that is thickly layered with...

Broken Ohms are a curious hybrid of tuneful, indie-based tracks that have been weighted down with heavy slabs of rock. It's quite a unique little (I say little, I mean enormous) sound that they have created which is almost like the missing link between Queens Of The Stone Age and Iron Maiden - yes... Do you like generic punk rock that is fun to listen to but adds nothing new to the musical melting pot? If so, then Shattered Feeling by Guns on the Roof is definitely for your ears and is well worth a listen. If not, then I advise you to steer very much clear of this single.

Shattered Feeling... Don't Stop was released as the first single from the Innerpartysystem self titled debut album. Originally released on 30th June 2008 it got to #153 in the British charts which is fairly decent for what was an unheard of band. It seems that the Innerpartysystem boy's aren't content with this...
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus according to the grapevine are currently undergoing issues with their label and might fins themselves dropped from their label if their second album and American tour do not provide the financial benefits that they are seeking. Unfortunately for The Red Jumpsuit... To give these trend-worshipping music vultures their due, I myself am not a Kings of Leon fanatic and know my way around their singles a lot better than certain album tracks, naturally. But you can’t go to a Kings of Leon gig, stand completely oblivious to such older live gems as Molly’s Chambers...

There are three types of 'awesome'. There is the official, literal version, used to describe something which fills one with awe, such as an incredible vista or a powerful force. There is the American child version, whereby one, for example, receives a cool new toy for no other reason than one's...
“Hello, I was wondering if you could help me? I’m looking for some good quality, terribly mainstream guitar pop. If you make it a little bluesy and very American I would be much appreciative.” So what was I handed? An album called “The Other Side” by a sickeningly young guitar playing action figure... After over a year of threatening to explode out of their local scene and into the much broader horizons of worldwide music via numerous successful tours (Japan, Europe etc), each packed with every single show more energetic than the last and a debut album that most other bands can only dream of... Music has thrown up a few husband and wife combos – Joy Zipper, Viva Voce and erm….Husband&Wife (OK they’re four guys who are not actually married) and now Jon and Psalm Sebastian from Poughkeepsie, New York give it a go as The Color Wheels. Released on Viper Bite Records, their self titled debut...
London band Milk Plus, comprised of rockers Butch La Rea and Robbie Pinna, let loose their debut three track EP Little Victories on the world via digital release in December. The three track hidden gem is a mixture of screeching guitar riffs, driving beats and howling punk vocals.

Track numero... In normal circumstances, I generally find pop-punk to be the most overused and unimaginative genres of modern popular music. Unfortunately for Porthcawl’s ‘Stereo By The Shore’, these are very normal circumstances. It’s difficult to know what to say about this record without it sounding like a... I've been trying to think of the things that I can do in 1 minute 42 seconds and to be honest I can't think of anything meaningful that I can do in that time (no dirty jokes please!).
