Default - Radio Radio

Everyone that likes Rock music knows that radio sucks, right? Well, thankfully radio is no longer going to be 'solely responsible for ruining music' as it is slowly fading into obscurity. Since January, about one rock radio station in the US every two weeks has closed its doors on us and re-opened as either Spanish or Urban. I hate Nickelback as much or more than the next person, but I have to admit a slight feeling of panic when I saw one of the largest alternative stations in the country (WPLY, Y100, Philadelphia) go from Godsmack to Chingy in a matter of seconds. Dude rock sucks..we all know it...but the fact it is disappearing from my radio is kind of freaking me out...because along with Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park goes Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse.

So, what's happening? Are rock fans suddenly not listening to the radio anymore? Sort of. The powers that be have decided those of us who like rock music are more inclined to purchase satellite radio or listen to stations online, so they are freeing up regular stations for those who are less likely to purchase those things (Latin and Urban). I can't even type that without feeling racist...but it wasn't my decision. I am not sure what exactly that is implying about my demographic or the Urban demographic, and I would rather not think about it. I think there is probably some truth to it. I know I listen to altsounds.com every day as opposed to turning on some static-ridden crap rock station playing Metallica for the 6 billionth time that hour while some cheesy DJ tells me about what trashy bar to go to if I want to see wet boobs and win some great prizes... but just because I hate it doesn't mean I want it to go away! I just want it to change!

I am wondering how other people feel about this change. The fact that you're on altsounds.com already shows you actively seek out new music, so this radio change probably doesn't matter to you...but indulge me.

Default - Re: Radio Re: Radio

Me personally. I don't care. I never listen to radio anyway. The same thing happened here in DC with one of the two rock stations closing its doors but they played crap anyway. I play my Ipod in my car and listen to music on altsounds.com to find out new bands to go out and buy.

I think its an awesome thing as that is going to mean more traffic for sites like this. Music is changing and the cool people will find ways to listen to good music regardless of whether its on the radio or not.

Thats my two cents on the subject.

While on the subject of radio everyone needs to mark April 12th 5-8pm EST in their calendars as it is going to be the premier edition of "The Altsounds.com Show" which is being broadcast on Punkradiocast.com. Should be killer and we are featuring 20 bands from altsounds.com being spun by a live DJ.

Can anyone say plug?

Default - Re: Radio Re: Radio

I don't listen to radio much but if I do anymore its web radio, since radio DJ's seem to play the better material for my tastes and more variety it's sometimes worth it to hear more interesting music than none at all. Sadly- Big money is to blame for the flooding of the crappy rock on commercial radio these days. It's what major labels do, they buy their artists on to the airwaves and the one with the most money wins.

Most fame is bought these days, not much in way of artist promotion is free anymore until websites like Altsounds come around and instill faith that good music still exists.

Subjectivity my friends! what is one mans junk is another mans treasure when it comes to distinguising good music from bad, but Commercial radio we all know is just brain washing the youngest and most influential.

Am I off track? of who cares!

Altsounds Radio show! on PUNKRADIOCAST.com listen in April 12th Tues 5-8pm EST

That's exactly what I am talking about! You should totally care about this change in radio, because that means a change in the industry. Like you said, the person with the most money wins...without radio being the dominating force in music trends, that's no longer the case. Internet radio, satellite radio, etc is what I like to call Equal Opportunity Airplay... unsigned bands have a shot too...without all that money behind them. Its significantly going to change the dynamic of indie vs. major and unsigned vs. signed...and a change is what we have all been begging for. So now the shuffle begins and the next 5 years are going to alter the course of music history....excellent time to be in the business.
